Why did sigma design a giant 35mm f1.2 when they can do this?
I love my sigma 35mm f1.2 but it is kind of heavy. I would gladly take a f1.4 if that meant a little less weight.
Have anyone seen how the lens handle transitional bokeh with full body shots? Some of the shots from Dustin Abbott video shows bokeh with hard rings... but hard to tell though.
Below is the shot I am talking about. Ignore the rings in the background as any lens will do decent with so much OOF. Look at the bokeh on the camera. You will see how the GM rendered them without any hard edges...very nicely. The new sigma f1.4 looks a bit harsh. I am viewing it on a 55" 4k TV though.

@GabrielPhoto The forum is waiting for you to take one for the team to do a Sigma DN vs
Sigma ART vs GM vs Samyang shootout
As for me, not being a professional shooter anymore the Sigma is a tough sell - it is by all means reasonably priced given the specs, but the Samyang is just way too much of a bargain. From early samples the AF, bokeh, and flare resistance look fine as expected, but so far I am not seeing anything that is double the price better than the Samyang. Would love to be proven wrong...

DPR has some sample images up that look like pretty casual real world images and reading the comments is incredible. I had no idea there were so many engineers frequenting that site....

They never stand still and are always learning and innovating. I bet a smaller 35mm is in the works now that they've done it with the 85; from what I've read an 85mm lens can use a relatively simple optical design, so that's probably why they started with that one. (see https://timurcivan.com/2018/01/an-examination-of-sigma-cine-prime-lenses/ where he says "Now, an 85mm is actually one of the simpler optical designs, and making all the corrections to achieve a perfect image is within the realm of possibility. The Rokinon 85mm for example is definitely the jewel of the set, and only $300. Sharp, low CA, low distortion etc.. The trouble is matching the rest of the set to that standard.")

I love the Sigmas and I’m sure this will be great (in certain areas), something is bound to be lacking with it. Having been won over by 2.8 zooms it holds little value for me,and ya know...the pandemic crushing 90% of my gigs plays a role too.

If I didn’t already have the GM, I would totally get this. Props to Sigma for making a compact, fully-featured lens with no compromise to IQ while implementing a competitive price point, as usual.

Great price point for the value, but maybe a bit too much for me and my intended use (once in a while head shots for friends).
Thinking I'll swap my Batis 85/1.8 for a Sony 85/1.8 because I can't deal with Batis MF. It's a shame, because I loved the Batis rendering, but also love MF for landscapes. Oh well.

Comparison Sigma Vs GM vs Samyang (in French)
My French is very rusty but scroll to 7:35 - the Samyang has creamier bokeh outlines than the Sigma!? (and less bokeh-LOCA than the Sony GM) But the Sigma has the advantage in terms of bokeh roundness when stopped down?

The Sony 85/1.4 GM is under corrected for spherical aberration, producing smoother rendering in exchange for a softer look wide open. Perhaps this was done intentionally by Sony since it's a dedicated portrait lens.
The Samyang is sharper wide open while rendering is not as smooth as the GM. I have not tried the new Sigma yet but it seems to be even sharper than the Samyang at f/1.4 while rendering is still very pleasant.

For comparing this lens to the GM specifically I found this review to be quite helpful, especially after translating the subtitles

I love the physical look of this lens, and it sounds like the build is very similar to the 45/2.8 - light and compact, yet solid and strong. Good on ya, Sigma!!
I'm still holding out for more slower compact lenses. Yeah, yeah I love my CV 40/1.2 and am blown away by what I'm seeing from the GM 24/1.4 and the Sigma 35/1.2, but I'd LOVE to see a shift towards smaller, carry-everywhere lenses. Sigma proved with the 45/2.8 that you can still have amazing bokeh and stopped-down sharpness in a small, slower lens.
I'd like to see the following in L and E mount:
18/3.5
24/2.8
28/2
90/2.8
...in as close to the form factor and rendering as the 45/2.8 as possible!!

This was a really impressive review. Did a nice comparison between the lenses. It's pretty damn impressive just how well corrected this new sigma 85 1.4 is.

Crazy how this lens is not really that much bigger than the FE 85/1.8 and the Fuji 56/1.2 and even Olympus 45/1.2 for m4/3... heavier by a couple hundred gm and but just 10-20mm longer depending on the lens, I find I care a bit more about volume than weight since I usually carry everything for my family (kids).

hahaha well, from my original test of the old Art vs Samyang, I already favored the Sigma so I don't think my test of the DN will change your opinion on it BUT I am willing to try it. Contacting my Sigma rep and hopefully I can make that happen, at least against my 105mm art.
If anyone wants to loan me a Samyang for the real world comparison, I will be happy to test it.
Rokinon stopped responding to me a while back(way before my 85mm comparison) so I am not bothering trying them any more.
