Small(er) yes lighter? Not so sure. Sigma isn’t noted for light lenses. Many people don’t realize that Sigma’s excellent 35mm F1.2 is a dedicated FE and L mount mirrorless lens only. I have one and it is very heavy.

The 85/1.8 is really tough to beat in terms of its overall performance to price. I know the “rendering” isn’t anything to write home about, but I see it go for under $500 used and that’s a steal.

Would that be only at 1.4, or also at other apertures?
Sadly the lens is a little more pricey than I expected. I'll stick with my Sony 85 1.8.

It's a tough market now for sure. The 85/1.8 is excellent, as you note, and if you want a better rendering, shallower depth of field, or both, the Samyang 85/1.4 is also $600 and is outstanding as well.
Knowing Sigma's optics, this lens will likely be fantastic, but it will need to be RF 85/1.2L levels of good to really push a lot of people to pay $600 more than the Samyang.

Interesting specs. I held off buying the sigma 85 1.4 since i already have a 105 1.4 which is my special bokeh beast that i take for specific uses. I tried a used gm 1.4 and really loved its rendering but ended up returning it since it had a nasty scratch across the front element and really didn't want to pay 2k for an 85mm. This new sigma might replace my samyang but we'll see how it performs. Now what I am excited about is the fact that they are announcing new products, not just one!! Ooohhh what other lens are they going to surprise us with to satisfy us crazy GAS addicts? Tomorrow my 100-400 gm arrives and Im having hard time sleeping already too excited
This also probably might bring down the resale value of the 85 gm but that will remain to be seen. I have been using the sony 85 1.8 i loaned from family for few months now but its rendering and sharpness left me wanting kinda. Still it's af speed and accuracy i really love. I used it at valley of fire and was happy with its performance but images really didnt have a wow factor either...

Obviously desperate to see how this depreciates my 85GM's resale
It all depends on how the Sigma's rendering compare. If it matches the Sony while offering faster AF, the GM resale value is in trouble.
Currently the 85/1.4 GM's used price is the same as the new Sigma.

GM prices in general are pretty far out there. Wait till the Sigma 135 native FE lens hits the market. Good to see the third manufacturers delivering quality, differentiated lenses, and at a more accessible price. We benefit from the AF nightmares being a non-issue with the Sony FE mount.
85GM has served me well for 4 years. Its rendering is unmatched as a portrait lens. I'll be watching the Sigma though!

Honestly I wanna know what this drop proof feature is all about
Sigma has created an invisible force-field technology that's auto-activated by a motion sensor built into the lens. Either that or the lens is clad in really, really thick rubber

Excited for this! Never could swallow the price of the GM, and while the Samyang f/1.4 is a great value, the erratic color cast problem has always made it a bummer to shoot with.

Very nice specs, but we have to wait to see what the rendering is like. For an 85mm lens and my uses the rendering is the most or at least one of the most important aspects of the lens. With some of their recent lenses (45 f/2.8; 35 f/1.2) Sigma has focussed on rendering and delivered excellent results. If this one follows that pattern with the specs above it would be a very special lens. And for those who complain about an .85m MFD, that is pretty typical at this focal length. If you want shorter, then you probably should be looking at a 1:2 macro.

I was excited for this lens at $999. If it's $1199 I would hope it's pretty much perfectly corrected of all aberrations with flawless rendering, as I've never in my life paid that much for a third party lens
Loving the small size though, and the info about the special elements is very promising. I'm excited to see how it does! even if I can't afford it in the end
