For comparing this lens to the GM specifically I found this review to be quite helpful, especially after translating the subtitles
Thanks a lot. Finally a reviewer who post a full body portraits against a tree background. I understand Chinese so it is perfect.
The sigma looks very very good at rendering even with the very tough full body shot.
It just convince me to place a pre order. I have this theory that the initial lens Sigma sent out are cherry picked So I try to get one of those. Kind of make sense right? If I am sigma, the lens I send out in the first week are always those that get reviewed.
My sigma 35mm f1.2 which I got at launch day is very good. My sigma 14-24mm is not so good but I got that the 14-24mm in the later batches...

Dustin Abbott has an interesting review. I think I might have to add it to my bag. Nice rendering.
I watched the whole review... so Long and not a single full body shot showing how it renders bokeh at transitional areas.
I really hope reviewers when testing bokeh don’t just shoot something closeup and blow the background into oblivion and conclude it has good bokeh.
It is so difficult to look for a good review which looks at bokeh in detail. Example, so many reviews of the sigma 40mm art says it’s bokeh it’s good... but it performs badly in the transitional areas.

I too have looked for that medium distance bokeh and transitional zone blur in samples and haven’t seen many or any that I could judge definitely.

So I’ve also been looking for uses of the lens that are more than backlit, tight, bust-level shots and it’s surprisingly difficult to find. But this guy here uses it for video o the model and approaches from a distance and the image has a very interesting look. She’s certainly “popping” against the very smooth background.

Lol every reviewer does that and says the bokeh is great. Then people on forums start shooting them in real world use cases find all sorts of squirelly bokeh. I.e. FE 35 1.8.

To be fair, bokeh was never great for the 35/1.8. Only Chad said that.

Well I never said the 35 1.8 has great bokeh. Actually far from it. Typical 1.8 lens I have said this many times . Sharp as hell with fast focusing but look is modern day with regard. to bokeh and look of the lens. You can throw in the 35,55,85 all 1.8 glass as they follow that same pattern. I’ve always disliked the 55mm. My problem was the 85 GM AF was horrid. It almost cost me a huge client in the studio. I had to buy the Sony 85 1.8 for the speed. This maybe could be the answer . Good look with some AFspeed

Did u look at the Sony 85mm f1.8 bokeh in detail? I have that lens but I never took a detailed look at it. I don’t see anything bad with it’s bokeh through normal usage.
Maybe it’s the dof of 85mm vs 35/40mm that makes transitional bokeh stand out more on the 35mm? I saw bokeh I did not like on the sigma 40mm soon after using it.
But I am much more forgiving on a cheap, Light lens like the 85mm f1.8 vs a bazooka like the sigma 40mm.

I’ve owned it several times. I’m not forgiving at all I have tested hundreds of lenses in every brand. I’m a working Pro. Been doing this for decades.
35 1.8 and Batis 85 test. I have tons of tests on the forum. Do a search

Thanks for the link. Your impressions is pretty similar to mine for the Sony 85mm f1.8.
I am thinking the sigma buys me f1.4 and lower LoCA over the Sony 85mm f1.8.
