The diffraction MTF on this lens is nearly 10% higher at 30lp/mm than the previous Sigma Art. That's nuts.

Yes but from the shape of the curves I can predict that a certain well known member of the forum will, at some point in the future, complain about a "center dip" in sharpness

I don't think so. The diffraction MTF (which more closely mirrors real world performance) show almost identical MTFs from the center to about 15mm from the center. There isn't a dip anywhere and certainly not at the center where there is almost never a dip. There is a mid-zone dip sometimes between 10 and 15mm from the center, but not on this lens.

the roundness of the bokeh seems to almost match the GM. I wonder how they compare in flare resistance

I re-bought the L version when I switched to Sigma fp. I think about selling it ALL THE TIME, because the VM 40/1.2 sees a lot more action, and I have mixed feelings about AF lenses in general.

Then, I'll be scrolling through my LR catalog and realize that the 45/2.8 is responsible for about 75% of my favorite shots anymore. It's really a gem, my only wish is that it were manual focus, ha!

Stop Steve! I've been thinking about repurchasing the Sigma 45/2.8. Loved the rendering when AF works.

Not to mention 200/2.0. The only lens I miss from my days as a Canon shooter.

Nice video. Here is a question I always wanted to ask (although it is not related to Sigma but Sony cameras in general):

When the camera switches from eye focus to face detect (i.e. you have the model's head surrounded by the green rectangle), what does it exactly focus on? The nose, the cheek bone, the lips, the hair? Is it smart, like it figures out the angle of the head and focuses on a detail that might be relevant for that kind of shot (i.e. cheek bone or lips)? Or is it rather dumb and will go for the closest detail available in the rectangle? Like if the model is looking sideways, it will go for the ear or hair? And if looking straight to the camera, the tip of the nose? Anyone that has studied this and could share some insight?

Something that always worry about compact fast lenses is mid-field resolution dip. I don't see that on Sigma's MTF. That's encouraging.

From my experience, unfortunatelly the latter so the dumb option of the closest point ...

How does the size and weight compare with the Samyang 85 1.4?

It’s slightly shorter than the Samyang, with no lens hood. Slightly longer with OEM lens hoods.

New sigma : 626g 102mm Length
GM : 821g 115mm length
Samyang : 568g

Video focusing the GM imo definitely is the winner. Much smoother. The new sigma does better than the old sigma. Smoother and more consistent focus changes.

Interesting timing on this lens. I’m on the edge of selling my 55 & 90 macro to use an 85 for midfield coverage (35/50/55 just aren’t interesting focal lengths and field of view to me). The launch price of the new Sigma is $1199, but I can get the 85GM for $1489 (edu discount) which clouds the decision a bit.

Solid review by Dustin Abbott so far, I’ll be interested to see how the FM members feel about it.

Quite a few 85gm popping up on buy and sell today too. I have the 1.8 and have loved it. So sharp but always contemplate if I’ll jump on a GM if I found one used. Soon as this was announced looks like a few people will be giving their GM up early for less or equal to the Sigma.

On my GFX50s where eye detect is not that good, I see when showing green square on the face, in the actual shot, it still nails the eyes. On Sony so far, eye detect looks good in the EVF. In reality it is good but not as good as made up to be. Maybe it is due to my lenses 28-75mm tamron and 85mm f1.8 sony.

Cool. Thanks Bud

I was close in my thinking on it.

Looks like a buy for many.

This may help guys like me with studio work where the GM 85 1.4 failed under modeling lights and slowness of the AF with that lens. I had to give up the GM 85 1.4 because of this issue and had to move to the 85 1.8 sony or Batis as the AF was much faster and could actually focus under dim modeling lamps.

This new Sigma hopefully will give us back the 1.4 but with the speed needed for that type of work. I may

I have only used my Sigma 105mm f1.4 in studio a few times and it was slow to AF. And eye-AF was not as good as people make it out to be. My camera A7rIV. Most Sony shooters are natural light shooters from what I have seen.

This looks to be designed with similar priorities to their 56/1.4 for APS-C. Very sharp, nice bokeh, pincushion distortion and a compact size. I'll trade distortion for high performance everywhere else given the size.

I love my Samyang 85/1.4, so I will almost certainly not be getting this, but it does look like a great option. Rendering looks lovely.

The 56 is the first that came to mind..... unfortunately, the 30 is not very good optically compared to the 56, so questioning if they can borrow that design or not... 45mm f1.4 would be interesting

The only thing I'd be worried about is the minimum focusing distance. The 55 isn't super close, but definitely closer and then using the 90 macro you may find yourself routinely aggravated. This has happened to me a lot with my 85. Just too often finding myself too close and unable to focus. The Batis, FE, GM, and Sigma all seem to have roughly the same MFD.

Well on this forum that certainly maybe true as there are few Pros here but having said that go grab a Vogue or other high end fashion mag and a ton of the ads are studio, not to mention catalogs and the like. So that need is real for speed and look.
im hoping this can be that balance lens. Be nice to have a 85 again as my 135 does double duty now.

Hopefully we will see more lenses get smaller from the past. Love for Sony to redo the 50 1.4 . In my mind one of the best 50s around but same issue. Slow AF speed
