It looks odd around here too (southern CA). Here is a grab from my backyard this morning.

Glad we are not suffering alone...

I have to say took a few shots with the Sigma 85mm and compared with the SonyG 135 1.8 and the bokeh obtained with the Sony is just unbeatable except perhaps for the circles .. but have not carefully compared yet.

Oh no that must be very annoying! We can return items without having to go through that whole process. I would be even more worried when ordering new lenses.

I'm not sure yet if I'll get another copy.
I'll have to test the AF in better light first. If it's not near the 85/1.8 I'd rather keep using that one and maybe try to get a decent 85 GM instead for the more static stuff.

Yeah it definitely is. I remember when I bought the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX lens from one chain store here, they acted all nice and said I need any help at all to come back. I went back the next day due to focusing issues and they pretty much told me it wasn’t their problem and to speak to Sigma directly lol. We also don’t have any decent rental options here, our daily rate is what you’d pay for a whole week .

I had the Sony 85mm f/1.8 and it was a great lens AF/IQ wise, I just felt the rendering wasn’t there. Although I’m not a huge fan of Sigma compared to someone like Tamron, Sigma has a real unique look to their rendering. This 85mm Art DN certainly has it too which is why I’m so tempted to get it. I think I’ll wait until later in the year to get it so any production issues can be fixed by then.

It’s for sure a dandy lens but I don’t find the 85mm FL especially useful. The 85mm slot is, for me, filled by the Sony 85mm F1.8 and a well adapted Canon 85mm F1.2.

It’s nice to fantasize about an entire line of fast/compact/light mirrorless Sigma lenses but the 35mm F1.2 is a new mirrorless design that is only slightly smaller than a DSLR lens. Also note that Sigma’s 105mm F1.4 lens is huge/heavy not because it’s a DSLR design (*) but for a better Bokeh effect.

* My Nikkor 105 F1.4 isn’t small/light but much smaller than the Sigma.

That’s a clear breach of the Australian Consumer Law:

https://www.accc.gov.au/system/files/Consumer%20Guarantees%20A%20guide%20for%20consumers_0.pdf

You should have reported them to Consumer Protection, then sent them a letter of demand to remedy the issue within seven days, then had a balif serve them with a small claims court writ to recover all costs.

Yeah back then I had no clue and just vowed to never shop there again. Later on I made friends with someone who used to work there but quit due to all the dodgy stuff the manager would do.

I think if my Samyang doesn’t sell I won’t be too sad, but I am still very tempted by this lens considering the Size/weight and IQ.

So I finally received my copy and AF is great, IQ and rendering seem nice considering the limited results I've been able to get. But does anybody else feel like the edge of the lens is sharp and digs into their fingers? I'm using an a7R III currently and if I fully wrap my hand around the grip, the edge of the 85 DG DN rubs against my fingers and is rather sharp, which ends up hurting after a while. Only used it a few days ago and I still have a mark on my knuckles.

Anyone else have this issue? Does anyone know of a good solution?

So, the lens itself is actually too sharp?

... sorry for the joke, I think my fingers are not big enough to run into this problem...

On second thought, I vaguely remember reading in some review/opinion about limited space between the grip and this lens... it was here actually (https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1656857/16#15338788).

Keep in mind that the 35mm f1.2 and 85mm f1.4 DN represent two completely different philosophies on Sigma’s part. The 35mm is the usual fully corrected path, the 85 requires heavy in camera or post correction for distortion which allowed far a dramatically smaller size.

The market will dictate which philosophy proves better, but I know I bought the 85 and won’t buy the 35 due to size.

I have not read this thread much but I gather let’s skip to the chase. Too modern sharp stuff and look or delicious look and feel.

Super sharp and corrected (sans distortion) .

Just got mine. In a first test against the Batis and Sony GM:

-The 85 DN Art is the quickest in focussing (compared to GM and Batis. It is super quiet wrt focussing, too)). Clear improvement to my GM,
-It clearly is the sharpest wide open (sharper at f1.4 than the Batis at f1.8 (I have a great copy) and clearly sharper than the GM). Didn't expect such a clear and noticable improvement.
-Sharpness is much higher and held much further towards the edges, too
-Extreme corner is sharper for the GM (which I don't care about)
-CAs are extremely low, much better behaviour than GM and clearly better than Batis
-Flare behaviour is different. The Sigma produces larger but smoother/weaker flares, the GM strong ugly green reflections.

Is a winner for us. Either the Batis or GM has to go. Must check my Sony pro service rules, first.

That would match my experience as well, I'm mostly struck by how clean and sharp the image is produced by this Sigma (I never used the GM though).
However, I don't agree on AF, though I only have the Samyang to compare now, but I remember Sony 1.8 being faster.
Did you try focusing on points far away from each other? Sigma is very fast when the focus distance change is minimal, but noticeably slower when it has to go a longer distance in my experience...

Yes the 85/1.8 Sony is faster wrt AF. I used the 85/1.8 in the past, but right now can only test against the Batis and GM. The Batis, at least my copy seems to glide into focus after an initial acceleration. It is quick, but the Sigma is at least as fast in my limited testing. Need to investigate this further.

Is a great lens. I use the Batis 85 lens profile with additional distortion correction - seems to work well so far.

So is anyone else having issues with their fingers chafing against the edge of the lens? And does anybody have ideas for possible solutions?

Is it because I'm on a gen III body? Are the newer cameras better in this regard, with more finger space? Would something like Sugru be an ok solution for rounding off some of the sharpness of the edge of the lens or would that take up too much space and cause my fingers to not fit anymore?

I used the R4 and set AF to responsive and fast. The Batis focusses faster in video mode than the Sigma. You can hear a low summing sound during focussing, whereas hardly anything can be heard with the Batis (but the noise is very very low, I only hear it when looking through the VF). Otherwise focus accuracy and transition was smooth with both, rarely any wobbling to find focus on very low contrast targets, when coming from in focus to fully oof targets.
I like the Sigma much better when focussing manually
I don't know whether this is an expected or good performance, I have no experience in video.
All I can say is that the stills performance of the Sigma is fantastic.

I like best that color rendering is very similar to the 35/1.2, so we don't need to tweak presets too much. The GM behaves completely different, here. This alone is a reason to use the new 85 Art for us at weddings.
