You had it gripped as well, right? I'd want to know how fast a single battery goes into the "white" mode.

Yes it was gripped but they do drain in parallel so I think it will end up being the same % whether draining 2 or just 1. However, I really don't know when it dropped to white from green as I was in ES and it doesn't show green in ES anyways. Only at the end when I decided to try MS one last time did I notice the white and a slower/jerkier EVF. Then Pius told me to check the indicator and it was white (9.2FPS). I've read other reports that people had it stay green well below 50%. Canon says it will drop to blinking white for 6.8FPS which I didn't see even as I finished the day at about 23% battery.

It's interesting and reassuring that users are coming to similar conclusions, namely the buttons (and programming) is better on the a9II and a7riv, the MS on the a9II is superior with respect to the EVF, and the af is stickier on the a9II. Personally, I find the R5 to be a much better camera than the a7riv, though again if one had an a9(ii) and Sony glass, the R5 is not a reason to switch.

The eye tracking is simply astounding and if one can get it to bite, then it tends to stay. Turning down the af sensitivity helps though

The 200-400 f4 or (200-560 f4 to f5.6 switched) is one heck of a lens although heavy.

He's basically a mammoth rising above a plethora of midget commentators.

I'm sorry about Ken is an absolute joke and has no credibility among serious photographers, bloggers, or journalists. It is all click-bait and search-engine optimization.

By the way, I tried to watch some of that but I couldn't get through it, the most cringy camera review I've ever seen.

Ken still has a fair bit of useful info. He was a joke 10 years ago, he isn't so much these days as far too many have taken his successful schtick and turned it up past 11. Ken's always been deliberately controversial with mostly useful info.

I'm guessing you've not watched 'Fro Knows Photos' with Jared Polin yet....

You'll cringe at the sniff and wind tunnel tests.

Used about $6k vs less than 2k for a 200-600 new. The Canon 200-400 is much heavier and if I am not mistaken optically it isn't significantly better.

I'm not suggesting they are comparable in their approach or in the what the images are handled. Only citing them as both influential to me when I am making camera and lens choices. Both always provide excellent images to support their conclusions. I respect both, as well as a few others who make a strong effort to show the gear in use to get technical results.

Jared is so bizarre. He's super weird and nerdy at times, but can also often come off as quite a jerk.

And yet, I find his content mostly quite helpful. He's a good photographer and knows his stuff, and he delivers that knowledge well, and so I do watch his videos quite a lot.

Nope, still can't take Ken seriously.

I know Jared Polin wears a strong aftershave, as we say, but I think his comments, knowledge and skills are very relevant. L-mount alliance anyone? ;-)

For the moment, I'm also one of those crazy guys. I bought the R5 to use with the Canon 500mm f/4 IS II I still had after I sold my Canon cameras. So, now I have the Sony A9/A7R IV and the 200-600mm and the Canon R5 with the 500mm. Pretty sure I'll stick with Canon, just because of the 500mm, but I agree with Arbitrage that the A9's AF seems stickier and and I need time to find out whether that's indeed the case as I get more used to the R5 and can shoot it in all situations

Must be nice, haha. I'm trying to find a way to buy an A9II to go with my RIV without my wife finding out. That's never a good idea though.

I just tell my wife that she is lucky I am into photography - much better than spending $10K on golfclubs and being gone 16 hrs every weekend, or buying a $25K jetski that gets used 2 times/year. ;-)

Actually, I find it a pain. I’d prefer one system that can do it all and that I clearly prefer.

PS I won’t tell your wife

I am curious how those comparing the R5 to Sony Cameras find the Canon lenses. Seems that Sony is putting out more impressive offerings outside of the f/2 zoom and the 24-70/2.8.

Rookie problems!! I kid.

Seriously though, it is key to have a completely separate gear fund. That way, no conversations are needed. Pieces of gear just mysteriously pop up that may or may not be the same lens or body I was using before. Ambiguity is good.

+1 on that.

My wife fully recognizes that I could be spending tens of thousands on a race car, motorbike, boat, more guns, etc, which would all ultimately lead to my spending more time away from the family. At least with gear, I'm still around more times than not and it yields a productive value for her in the photos/video as a result.

This factor, combined with the separate gear fund have afforded me a good amount of latitude with regard to questionable items showing up in my hands. Kind of a hear no evil, see no evil mentality on her part at this point.

Yes, amazing content. I find the "grains of salt" on his website surpass the "steak" of a few other notable reviewers. What I like most about Rockwell's site, is using it for starting point. It's among the best organized and he lists a lot of points for consideration. Then I note those, then use his interjections to branch out into other searches for a broader perspective.

Used to be that Sony lenses were all over the board in terms of quality control. Don’t know if that’s improved. I only have the 200-600mm from Sony and sold all my Sony lenses after I first got tired of the brand. The second time around, I bought a used Zeiss Batis 85 and two Tamron lenses, which are smaller and cheaper than comparable Sony glass.

As I am typically hauling three bodies and long glass, the thing that’s most attractive to me with E mount lenses is that you can get some excellent optics in very reasonably compact and light packages. That and the fact that there is a wide variety of offerings from other companies besides Sony. I’m always looking to go lighter and smaller but I’m not willing to sacrifice image quality. When I look at other systems and compare the alternatives to some of the Sony lenses I use (mostly GM), it’s pretty rare that I find anything that matches up without being bigger and/or heavier.

I agree. The only lens that really tempts me from other systems is the Nikon 24-70/2.8 S. I wish Sony would come out with a version 2 of the 24-70/2.8 GM (or better yet, something innovative like an excellent 21-65/2.8 or 24-100/2.8). I guess the Nikon 14-30/4 tempts me a little as well.

I prefer Jared Polin over KR every day. His sniff and wind tunnel tests are just jokes not to be taken seriously.
If being an experienced photographer, I can't imaging needing to get input from KR at all.

I never thought I'd see the day when Ken Rockwell was touted as a reliable review source on FM.
