BIF shooters seems the most demanding, switching systems for the latest features, losing money in the process and maybe lose more money in the future when Sony releases something better in the A9III like bugs eye AF

For everyone else the A7iii/A7IV and A7rIII is still plenty.

It's great to see Canon bringing some good competition. I'm honestly surprised at how quickly they caught up with Sony in terms of photo autofocus. It's impressive, and I think they even beat the A9ii when it comes to animal AF.

I hope they keep up this rapid pace of innovation in the mirrorless space, and I would definitely consider Canon in the future if they do depending on what Sony brings.

For now, I'm more than satisfied with my A9ii, though.

sort of glowing. Just not for video production. For stills (which is all I would care about), it seems like a fantastic camera.

Yep. He's just (rightfully) calling out how they are not really reliable video production cameras and how Canon should not have focused on their video aspects in the marketing.

They seems like fantastic hybrid cameras and a big upgrade for anyone currently using an EOS R.

The problem for stills photographers that don't need the overheating video fluff is that the asking price is pretty steep compared to the competition. You can get a new R4 for $2800 out the door.

The camera is simply overpriced as a 45mp stills body.

Undone's review is excellent. Well balanced and informative. He does a good job of pointing out where the R5 and R6 are strong, and they have considerable strengths, but he also points out where they are weak, which unfortunately has a strong overlap with Canon's marketing and the fan boy hype. Thanks for posting the link to this excellent review.

This is just the AI being trained better, something which can be improved via firmware on the A9ii.

I wouldn't call the R5 over priced right now. It's in high demand. When the A7RIV was launched, it was $3500. You only get good deals through greentoe or the EDU channel. It's till listed $3200 after a $300 rebate. If the Canon R5 really approaches the A9II in AF and FPS, with 45 MP and some excellent although limited video features, I think it's quite a good deal compared to the $4500 Sony is asking for its A9II, just for the camera itself, not talking about lens selection etc.

R5 has none of the special sauce of the A9 eshutter/zero blackout/fast sensor readout. In no way is the R5 an equivalent action cam. AF is still up for debate, need way more user testing in hand to determine.

The Sony R2, R3, and R4 all have better IQ, DR, and battery life (R3-4) in the 45mp stills space, and all are far cheaper.

Well, you and I haven't shot the R5 personally. From most of of the reviews I have seen, the R5's AF is excellent, the jury on eshutter/black out is still out. If Canon had long RF telephone lens that I want, I would have no hesitation to pick up the R5. But that's just me.

BTW, I have the A9, A7RIII and the A7RIV... Yes, the RII, III IV may have slightly better IQ, but none of them does 20 FPS and has the R5's AF.

Jury is still out on a lot of things, but for example not on rolling shutter with the eshutter. The readout time (1/60) is identical to the E-M1 mkII so we can just look for examples on how rolling shutter works on that one; about how you expect with sensor so much slower than on the A9

https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4159723

AF can well be excellent, but I'm yet to see R5 tests on any targets that would be very challenging to my A7RIV; other than the Animal Eye AF pattern recognition being clearly better than the one in Sony.

Exactly (AI/ML - finally my type of discussion ;-)) - Sony will/should deliver a firmware update based on improved AI models to improve on Sony's AF accuracy and speed.

The 20FPS is highly distorted on moving objects. The R5's AF isn't in the same league as the A9, and tracking with it will be difficult with the slideshow effect.

Should? Yes.

Will? This is Sony we are talking about here.

38 pages and counting on a Canon R5/R6 thread in a Sony forum. I’d say Canon has a big hit on their hands and am not at all surprised serious photographers, even serious Sony photographers are considering their options.

Likewise, I don’t think any of this caught anybody at Sony by surprise. There will be a response and it already started with the a7s3 😎.

I sure hope so! I like my A9ii and upgraded from the A9 at release, but I must say it feels like they did the bare minimum to make it out in time for the Olympics. I really appreciate the changes they did make and think it's a better camera, but I do hope there are firmware upgrades down the road.

RE your reply to the post above yours, what you said about price sounds sensible. Here's a video someone shared on the FM forums yesterday. Another forum viewer who watched, noted these excerpts:

“No Blackout. None!!!“ ... and ... “The R5’s autofocus system surpasses the A9II’s, especially the animal eye autofocus. It’s amazing. I was shocked...”

But just getting back to the price, I wish it was about $400 less. But the price seems very reasonable, especially for a new release.

This might as well be their swan song. Check Canon's stock, prefferably plotted on the same chart as Sony. The R5 announcement only made it worse.

Think of it. What if there's nothing more to come. And your flashy new expensive R system will be worth, in a few years, about the same as a Samsung NX one. Have you checked whether you could, at least, adapt those RF lenses on something else?

Give it a couple months I bet you can get one for $400 less. $3900 is a lot of $$ for most people right now. I got $500 off the A7RIV at the end of September last year, about just six weeks after it was in the market.
