p.23 #1 · Back On Sale: Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G lens for only $798 ($100 off)

I got lost on this thread but I saw some negative comments and seemed like color was the issue. My interest since I have the 14-24 which I really don’t need anything unless I want a smaller lens strictly for size and weight. So I guess the real question here is which. I’ve owned them all, what to go back too or buy
Loxia 21 I kind of swore Loxia off. Hate the ergos
I thought about the CV 21 1.4 which I really liked. Not exactly small and maybe not a big advantage given it’s a fairly big lens. The CV 21 3.5 still love it but sharper and faster would be nice. GM 24 had it but it would be 3 24mm focal lengths. Too redundant. My thoughts where 2 lenses for travel CV 50 app and a 20/21. Have to think about it more as this looks interesting too.

Are we using this thread for 20G images?
If so, here are some from yesterday.
If not, never mind.

Here's a view night shots I took from Newfoundland. These are my first two attempts at astro so don't hold it against the lens. Overall i'm really pleased with it, lighter and smaller than 16-35 f4 to better complement my 24-105 for hiking trips, and now this low light capability I can play around with.

As I have thought about this lens and seen how much wider it is than the 21mm lenses, I am think about it as a replacement for the Batis 18. It seems much closer to that lens with a focal length that seems to be more like 19 than 20 and an AF lens. It is just a bit heavier than the Batis, and physically smaller (about the same length but quite a bit skinnier with a smaller filter), and it is a stop and third faster, has an aperture ring, and linear manual focus. I like the IQ of the Batis a lot, but I don't like that it takes up so much room in my bag and I really dislike using it for manual focus, which I do a lot for a lens this wide.

I have wanted a nice small 18mm Voigtlander manual focus lens, but this may do. I think it would work well in a set with the Loxia 25, Voigtlander 40, Voigtlander 65, and a longer lens.

Don't forget the much higher max. magnification as well. It if wasn't for my Loxia 21 and Sigma 14-24, I would be all over this lens.

It's really not a 20mm--my Tamron isn't marked except for 20, where they are not the same. Maybe the Tamron isn't that accurate, but it feels wide to me for a 20mm. I think it's more like an 18.5-19mm. It's a decent chunk wider than my Contax G 21. I posted in the other thread, but maybe I missed it. I was hoping someone would compare it against another 18mm prime or a zoom.

Woohoo Fogo!
You wanna avoid light sources doing astro. Go where its darkest/no light pollution from streets or buildings. Folks love the desert for such things.

I don't know about the Tamron, but Zeiss lists 21.5mm as the focal length for the Contax G 21, so it makes sense that its a decent bit wider. The Sony could be as close to 20mm as 19.5mm and still be noticeably wider.

And it also has a PCX filter, so not sure if that alter things as well.

Generally yes, particularly light pollution, but sometimes light can be good for Astro. Moonlight illuminating the foreground can be particularly helpful if that's what one is going for.

Hard to maintain social distances here in Seattle if the weather is even halfway decent.
Quick shot from the sunset with the 20G.

So far the 20mm paired with the Samyang 45 1.8 gives me one of the lightest, sharpest, fastest 2 lens AF kits I have ever had. Lov'n it
