The side by side comparison above by Brian Smith looks odd because the new FE 20/1.8 G's aperture closes to f/22!

Sorry for wandering off topic a bit - but those in the US may not be able to order from Henry's anymore for the savings. I placed an order a few weeks ago for a Sony lens and it was later cancelled with the following note:

that's a bummer, i just spoke with another poster that received his 35/1.8 from henry's a few weeks back.

I agree with the other posters that the 20mm is more versatile than the 24mm.

(At least, more to my liking. )

Indeed, looks fake. f22 is clearly depicted on the real lens!

Same,

I would have preferred a FE 20/1.8 G + 35/1.8 G set with similar optical characteristics and functionality.
Having that said, I still don't know how the new 20/1.8 G renders. Hoping it will be similar to the 24/1.4 GM's. Also no word on field curvature where the 24/1.4 GM is virtually flat field.

Glad I've been holding off on purchasing the Batis 18mm. This looks like a better compromise to me, and at a lower price. For me, at least, it pairs very well with the 24-XXX zooms (I have the 24-105mm). The 24mm field of view after applying distortion correction, for example, on the 24-105mm, is significantly narrower than the field of view for the 24mm, probably closer to 26mm than 24mm. . . . Also, with the A7RIV, in ASPC mode, we'll still get a 26 megapixel, 30mm equivalent field of view. And the sunstars look very good in Albert Dros' and the PC Magazine early reviews.

Well bokeh doesn't look that bad (A. Dros):

Looks nice!

However, all these samples are at close distance or MFD.
At close distance blur masks the focus transition zone. The real test will be at 2-3m distance.
The reviewer at dpreview wrote that rendering is similar to the FE 35/1.8 for the OOF off-axis area.

"Furthermore, we do see some bright-edged highlights as you approach outer edges of the frame, so we'd expect slightly busier bokeh at extremes of the frame, much like the Sony FE 35/1.8 lens."

If we get 24 GM color and coma correction and fairly smooth rendering (GM24 is narrower and faster so I expect the G 20 to be worse), I’ll sell my GM 24 and Tamron 17-28.

I really like the GM 24, except the FL.

20/21 + 35 + 75 is my typical kit.

Like others, this should have been Sony’s 35/1.8 approach.

Fingers crossed. And boy does the FE system have a glut of wides. If you step back and look it’s incredible.

I want to see mid distance and transition zone. These photos are easy for Bokeh.

After the release of the FE 35/1.8, I don't think Sony will design a 35/1.8 G anytime soon. The only hope is for a GM for this focal length...but then, it may not be very compact anymore...

True. R. Sanyal is praising it.

"This lens has almost no detectable LoCA or fringing to speak of. This is pretty remarkable. Have a look above, sliding left to view feline hairs at 100%. Typically, backlit hairs will have magenta fringing and green fringing on hairs in front of, and behind, the plane of focus, respectively. But we see nothing of the sort."

I'd pay 1199CAD, it's 950 GBP here equivalent to 1236USD / 1642CAD

I agree, which is why they really missed the boat. And they took forever too...

But the new CV 35/1.2 should be fun, even though it’s a different lens entirely.

Have been going back and forth on whether or not to get the 24 GM to pair with the 85 f1.8. Looking to replace my 28-75 with just primes.

Just sold my 28-75 and now have GM 24, CV 40 f1.2, and Sony 85 f1.8 as my small kit with the GM 135 available if additional reach is needed. This new 20mm f1.8 is tempting (GAS related) but I agree with the others that it might be too close to my GM 24 IMO.
