Sony FE 20mm F1.8G

I don't want to derail this thread anymore but I find it interesting they share the same concerns in China (courtesy of google translate) :

Finally, it is a pity that FE35 / 1.8 can not use 20G specifications, no XD Motor, and no special lenses.

Well, unless they are cheating on the size of the aperture at wide open, or some other dimensional aspect of the lens.....the light has to be lost somewhere. No glass and coating can transmit 100% of light, so the more elements involved means more glass and surfaces to travel though. Are all elements of all lenses all coated the same on both sides, etc. I'm not sure what else it could be. Either cheating a little in design or light loss due to the physical glass and surfaces the light has to go through.

I think the difference between T-stop and f-stop depends on coating and the number of elements? I don't see a reason why smaller aperture lenses lose smaller percentage of light assuming similar coating technology.

Yes. That is why normally T-stop value is always larger than F-stop, the light has to be lost somewhere. I am simply refuting the argument that slower (bigger f-stop) lenses lose less % light than faster lenses (smaller f-stop), everything else being equal.

I generalized that a slower lens might have less elements than a faster one. Usually fast lenses need to be more complex depending on how well they are corrected So maybe I should just say that a more complex design with more elements might have a harder time keeping up with a simpler design with less elements. (Coatings being equal.)

It's not fair for me to generalize, so I wouldn't dispute your point.

Update: The new Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 is now in-stock!!

B&H Photo | Adorama | Amazon

So, it looks like all pre-orders were shipped today and there still lenses in stock at all three stores above.
Very different story compared to the FE 24/1.4 GM's initial availability.

I picked up my copy today, some quick test images. Focus was on the muzzle of the canon, from raw in LR Classic, minimal processing.

Fast lenses usually vignette more which affects the T-stop measurement wide open. Your center exposure might be close from one to the next, but depending of the fall off, anything even slightly off center could be a darker T-stop than you'd expect. That effect can then be affected more by steep ray angles at the periphery of the sensor from larger apertures.

Yup, Best Farm to be precise. I live nearby so it is my standard test bed for new camera equipment. Was in a bit of a rush earlier but my initial impressions are positive. At least as good as my CV 21/3.5 and probably better. Even wide open the edges are pretty good though the far corners not so much but all that improves quickly as you stop down.

It's no secret that I've been shooting Sony for many years...

Once the Nikon 20mm f/1.8 S is available in-stock, I will post it as well.

Here are the links for the 24mm and 85mm Nikon lenses posted on the front page:

What’s Nikon. Smart people shoot Sony, I thought everyone knew that.

Hey I remember them. I also remember waiting and waiting and waiting for them to make a mirrorless FF camera. Got tired of waiting.

Weren't they the ones who said "who needs full frame" when digital made the scene?

They sure were. For five long years - from 2002's 1Ds to 2007's D3. I remember it from my last Nikon, the sticky body D200. Talk about bad menus, that thing had four 'custom' memory settings and four 'shooting' memory banks, and they changed to the last setting every time you used them!

Even Ken found it confusing:

'Don't worry about what is in what menu. It doesn't make complete sense and you'll forget where things are. It's not you, it's the camera. The Recent Items Menu is the only way I find most of the menus I use, which is great except that that menu doesn't recall items from every menu!'

Mine arrived today. No time right now until next week to test it, but the lens looks nice.

Very quick test: nicely centered. Peak sharpness around f4-f5.6, but at f1.8 I can't see a difference vs. f8 in the center (A7r3).
