I bought into the R5 with both eyes wide open—the 4K 120p is exquisite, AF reminds me of the Sony A9 when I owned it, ergonomics are top-notch and the images are consistent with Canon. The UI took some time to familiarize, but now, after many sessions of configurations, I am able to get to my intentions with the least amount of thought and effort.
Overall, I’d say it has lived up to my expectations! The hype on the other hand is another matter.

Soo to all of you folks that bought the R5 does it live up to the hype?!
Well, Let's put that question into perspective, shall we?
This was the OP original question.

We've seen almost all the R5 specifications and people seem excited. The big question seems to be whether it truly does 12fps in AI servo and what the exact MP count will be.
Given Canon's history, do people really think they are going to release a screamer that knocks everyone socks off with 12fps in AI servo at 40MP+?
Or, do you think it will end up being a slightly better 5DIV with slightly better if not the same IQ, and just more cropping power?
Based on history, I think we'll see the latter. Basically a 5DIV with 10 more MP. If that's true, I wonder where the price will land? Close to $4000?
If it's a legitimate 12fps in AI servo and performs like a sports body then this body would have to be close to $5000.
I understand the video might be better, but I'm not sure what the demand is for an 8K video camera right now....Show more →
So the answer to your question is an unequivocal and resounding YES! I would even go as far as to say "Oh hell yeah!"
By all counts it is unquestionably everything that it was rumored to be and then some.
Yes, Canon is back with a vengeance! Can’t wait to see them roll out their new M-line of cameras and lenses. Should also be another revolutionary release. Canon is now the innovator again, and it will dominate the mirrorless market. Didn’t think they could pull it off but they did!

As to weather they beat "this" rival company, or beat "that" rival company, that can be voiced by those that haven't evolved mentally beyond adolescence.

I don't shoot video at all. I preordered an R6 since it suits me needs better. I thought about this thread and figured I'd bump it
I too preordered the R6, but once I saw the high ISO images from the R5 I decided to just try and get the R5 instead. Already got my CF Express card, and just waiting for someone to have one in stock. Ideally I guess I would also get the R6, but I don't think the bank account can handle both purchases.

Did you call Dodd's or the pixel connection?
I have called both, along with MPEX, and every camera store along the I-75 corridor that I drove last weekend. Also have the grip and spare battery on preorder from Pixel for the last month and they say none have come in.

I'm not sure yet.....the R5 sounded great but things are heating up!

Oh I'm quite sure it has Lived up to the hype after using it since day one. Not a single complaint yet. I've even shot some 4k 120 with it and I didn't see any smoke or flames like all you YouTube kids are trying to claim.
So have you had any problems with your firsthand experiences with YOUR R5?
Canon didn't just catch up, they've taken the lead.

Canon screwed the pooch on this one. This camera has an identity crisis with a big mystery as to what it is. We thought it would be a good video camera when we heard the specs...not. A good hybrid for both stills and video...not. Canon should have made two cameras (still & video) instead of trying to pack everything into one and causing issues with heat, battery life, performance, etc.
Canon has woken up and is definitely headed in the right direction. I'm confident they'll get it right on the next generation. The R5 was their first attempt and it had good intentions but they missed the mark. The R was a half ass attempt so it's not relevant.

You seemed to have missed my question so I'll ask again.
Have you had any problems with YOUR R5?
Or are you simply regurgitating everything the YouTube kids are crying about due to their low reading comprehension skill level?
Canon was very clear on ALL the specifications and recording time limits, due to the world class video specs they packed into these still cameras, BEFORE orders began. It's not Canon's fault kids now-a-days can't comprehend what they read.
I for one never thought that the R5 or R6 would be a video camera, and I am pretty sure I am not alone in this thinking. They played up the video in the promos only because it's the first camera to offer 8k video ... but that doesn't make it a video camera. It's just a bragging right to have 8k video.

There are many wedding photographers that shoot both stills and videos and Canon's BS marketing of the video capabilities of the R5 just lead them all astray. This camera would be a disaster waiting to happen if you shoot both stills and video with it.

Don't get so defensive, it's just a tool we're talking about here.
I don't have problems because I did not purchase 4k worth of problems for a camera that bricks. In your application it might work great for perched birds or a dog in the pond. But others might have higher expectations for a camera at that price point. Plenty of reputable photographers have used it and commented on battery life, heat, and bricking after stills and video.
I scrolled through the 20 page R5 image thread and didn't see anything different that what we've been seeing for the last 15 years. The 50 1.2 is the gain and it seems to be a winning combo. Other than that, I see RobAmy is displaying a lot of photos taken the "hard way" with heavy crop or low SS, but the final results are not as good as what he's posted in the past with his 1DX's and long glass. Just my honest opinion.
It might be a fun shiny new toy to have considering it's been a very long wait, but it doesn't look like anything special to me at that price point. Perhaps a still oriented camera without filter and no NR in RAW paired with a separate full blown video spec'd camera would have been a better choice. Canon tried to do it all and it backfired. They'll get it right next time after this debacle.
lol. A perched bird or a dog in the pond? Come on.I have this camera. This thing is magic. For real.

They played up the video because the R5 is an achievement for hybrid shooters. Sony couldn’t deliver a high megapixel hybrid with 10-bit Color—or anything close to the fantastic output of the R5.
Recently I’ve done some testing with the 4K non-HQ (no heat restriction) and I couldn’t believe the quality—as good as my Lumix S1.
