I generally felt it was faster and more accurate. I’ll be interested to see what Pius says since he’s used the 1DX2 more recently. I sold mine about a month ago and rarely used the 2X for flight but I wouldn’t hesitate to use it if need be now.. I was able to get most shots nicely in focus in poor light of gulls in flight. Not the biggest challenge but I think it was faster than previous bodies. Certainly more accurate. It is better without TC or with 1.4X.

By chance did you notice any AF speed performance using the 2x over the Mark II?

Awesome news and thanks for your findings. I have a 600mm coming Saturday looking forward to trying it out.

Take some shots at 1/250, then 1/200, then 1/160 with OVF then with live view. See if you have the issues at 1/160.

I had an interesting occurrence on a series of photos I took of a Northern Cardinal earlier this week. Presumably moire? I've never seen this on any of my other cameras including fairly extensive usage of the 5DSR. Thoughts?

The 600mm lens came in so I threw the 2x on it and gave it a go at 1200mm. Seems to work faster on the new camera. AF seemed to lock on very well also. Overall I was pleased during the brief use.

Now, with a 1DX Mark III and a nice lens, everyone can take a good looking picture.

And a good photographer can make amazing photographs.

Where are the handheld shots through the OVF at 1/160 with IS on

They are handheld with the OVF but they are not at 1/160. I received the lens later in the morning so I just wanted to try the 1200mm out. I will test the 1/160 and let you know.

I took some shots with the 1DXIII today...unfortunately they reside on Pius' memory card....maybe he'll post one of them later as they were probably the best shots he got today

I shot LV from the rear screen held out in front of me, e-shutter, handheld 600III/1.4TC of a N. Harrier fly by. Color me impressed and I will say it certainly feels like a live feed whether it is or not. No problem firing away and tracking along with the harrier. Pius will have to check if there is any distortion in the file but I don't think there will be much as there were no complicated backgrounds and the harrier isn't flapping its wings very fast.

Geoff and I were out shooting yesterday, he had a go at the 1dx III with the 600 III + 1.4 hand held in live view mode (no hoodman) tracking a harrier. His total was 109 shots which 95 % were in focus (electronic shutter).
The harrier was flying a fair distance away and passing in-front of trees.
Arbitrage can add his comments below...

Any comments on AF performance in OVF? Is there any significant improvement? Especially when tracking/sticking to the subject on busy backgrounds?

And for those shooting in both, OVF and LiveView, which AF tracks/performs better?

I feel the it is definitely improved with the OVF. It sticks really well now. I see the most improved area is when a bird is coming strait at me.

As far as live view I feel it tracks the same as the OVF but I really like the full focus area over the OVF area. Also you can’t set the OVF to use eye AF if that is something you want.

One other point in the AF area is the OVF only does f8 and the Live view does f11 and you can stack extenders in live view and it tracks well to.

Canon did well with this release.

Agreed. I was impressed with it in the few minutes I used it. I would have been a very happy camper if I'd stuck it out with Canon over the past few years and then got to buy this bad boy. Hopefully the R5 will continue this trend.

I’m temporarily without the camera and can only contribute my observations. The picture of the Northern Harrier clearly shows a photographer under extreme stress. This should not be surprising since holding the 1Dx3 can make ones’ knees tremble if not from excitement, then from the weight of the rig :-)))

Yes, holding the camera out a foot in front of me, trying to squint at a 3" LCD with a 600/4 lens on it did put the biceps under some significant stress

Rough camping / photo trip this weekend. Had fun with the new camera, just too tired to cull / edit photos. No bears this weekend. Oh well. More to come.

Here are a few shots from the past week. All with the 1DX3/600iii. Some with TCs, some without. I tried shooting gulls on the tripod with the Hoodman and the 600/1.4X as well as the bare 600. I found that for birds that we not approaching MFD, this was completely doable and I found the tracking to be extremely accurate. It became very difficult shooting at 20fps electronic shutter and the perceived slideshow effect. There wasn't much of the slideshow effect when the birds were distant, but as I was trying to follow close birds, it very clearly started having a significant amount of slideshow effect.
