p.12 #1 · Official 1dx Mark III picture thread

I took my 1DX3/600iii out for the second time today. I intended to shoot at a seed pile at a local park for a while at sunup and then go shoot some more gulls... but our newborn at home with my wife had other plans and I was only able to shoot at the seed pile. I shot about 50/50 with the OVF and the live view. I just received the Hoodman Loupe this evening and intend to try it out. It seems pretty promising so far playing around with it at home.

Two things to note/question--with the 600iii, the issues with slower shutter speeds as chronicled in my long post about the 5DIV/600iii IS issues are present with the 1DX3 as well when shooting through the OVF. I essentially cannot get a sharp shot through the OVF with IS on at 1/160. Secondly, when shooting in live view, electronic shutter, with IS on, I occasionally feel like I'm getting a bit of a jump with the IS. Basically every time the camera takes a shot it's as if the IS has to move and I feel a very small vibration coming from it. Interestingly when I tried my 600iii on my SONY A9 with the Sigma MC-11 adaptor, I got a very severe "jerking" of the IS when trying to pan.

The 1DX3 and 600iii play very well together with teleconverters. The 1.4Xiii seems to have little to no effect on AF or IQ. With the 2Xiii attached, focus does slow down and image quality is taken down ever so slightly, particularly at f/8 in poor light, but I found today that stopped down to f/10 with good light, the combo was extremely sharp and responsive. The camera seemed to drive the 600/2X combo a lot faster in the OVF mode than the live view mode.

I wish I had a bit more room at the top to give the bird some more space. No more space to bring back unfortunately.

Nice work Ryan. I have a 600mm coming soon so I can test out the jumping issue. I have not noticed that. Interesting you are finding the 2x is faster in OVF. Hopefully you like the hoodman, not ideal but works better than holding it out in front of you. I great way to use the full silent mode in my opinion.

I almost don't want to post but some variety to the perfection of the last posters. I am a very novice photographer who started shooting my kid's hockey games as a way to contribute to the team; I know nothing about hockey. I'd been using my 6D and was running into all sorts of issues, so decided to go straight to the top.

Both images with 1DX MKIII and EF 300mm f2.8 IS II. Shot through "very" beat up rink glass.

Doesn't look like I can add in an edit but just tried and that was what I was missing. Thanks! Off to shoot, will use next time.

Great details in these shots Ryan. Thanks for sharing your experiences with the IS etc.
I've never found a MILC that can focus "faster" than a good DSLR. So not surprised the OVF AF system is faster than the LV system. However, usually the LV is more accurate IME....did you find it more accurate than the OVF AF at 1200mm? Accuracy over speed in my book. I still think the 7DII had the fastest AF of anything I've owned over the years but we all know how that one turned out for accuracy

Sample size isn’t big enough yet to tell. I wish there were an easy way to tell which shots were OVF and which were Live View when reviewing in Lightroom.

FWIW, I found my EOS R to be more accurate in focusing than my 5DSR and 5DIV at 600, 840, and 1200, particularly so at 1200. Drive speed was much slower with the EOS R though. 1DX2 seemed to be pretty accurate with OVF. I’ve since sold all three of those DSLRs and now have an EOS R and a SONY A9. The 200-600 is my only SONY lens. Currently debating how long I may keep the SONY setup although it seems unmatched for flight photography with anything I currently have. I haven’t tried the 1DX3 with the 100-400 +/- 1.4X TCiii yet nor have I tried it with the 400 DOii. Lots of choices to make in the coming months but I do see the 1DX3 being around for a while. I don’t think I’ll have the EOS R for a terribly long time, but how could you resist it at $1299 back in December?

Well - not an easy way, but DPP is providing AF field display.

If I hadn't found such a quick local sale for my 400DOII back in November, I would probably have pulled it off the market and bought an EOS R during the holiday sales. Now seeing the R5 rumors and even the 1DXIII specs I sort of regret having sold the lens as I don't have a big lens to try out those cameras. But it would be easy enough to buy another 400DOII if I so choose so I will wait and see what the R5 brings to the table.

Unmistakably Canon is trying to shake off a foreign body transplant.

I wanted to try if the stacking extenders with the 400mm DO II. Worked well in Live View. Seems to track well. I only tested on static shots. The exif does not show the correct info. I had a 1.4x + 12mm tube + 2x attached. Canon definitely has improved using extenders, very impressed.

My wife and and went to the community park with the dog, so I decided to take a few pics. I keep forgetting when you are in custom mode the shutter speed reverts back to the speed when the mode was set. All of these are pretty much shot at 1/640. Oh well the karma continues.

If you are talking about C1,2,3 modes, you can set it so those modes retain updates made to them while you are in that mode and won't revert back to settings when you initially set them up. That is the way I preferred using them.

I didn't know you could do that. It has driven me crazy with my 1dx for a while now. I will read through the manual.

Thanks
