I have the E39 Push-on Lens Hood for both of my 35mm f/2 and 50mm f/2 ELCAN. This hood is good. Same thing as the Push-on Lens Hood for the SPII. No problem with these 3.
The problem I have is the hood for the 50mm f/1.2 "1966" and the 28mm f/2.8 Nine Element. Someone has already replied and mentioned that their hood for the 50mm f/1.2 scratches the lens outer rim when it was fitted. And scratch also happens as well on my 28mm f/2.8 Nine Element.
Those inexpensive 3rd party threaded hood would solve the problem. But I hope that LLL would look into the issue and make adjustments and changes to their future products. ...Show more →
I thought the original Leica hoods from that era, that use the small 'claws' to secure the hood to the groove on the outside of the lens, also scratched the original lenses. One could argue that this is a faithful reproduction of the originals.

I understand your reply was a light-hearted joke. :-)
On a more serious note. On the 28mm f/2.8 Nine Element, LLL have in fact made changes to the original Leica design. My understanding from Macfilos review is that the sixth inner element was changed to an Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass. It made a marginal increase in resolution in the centre, a drastic increase in resolution in the corners and edges, and drastically minimised distortion and chromatic aberration. Out-of-focus characteristics are now more rounded, with a pleasant circular out-of-focus bokeh. It also eliminated the red-fringing that occurred with digital camera sensors with the original lens.
In other words, LLL have made improvements across the board to the original Leica design. It is not a "true" faithful recreation. ;-)
Anyway, I hope LLL would look into this issue and make future improvement on their products. The issue can be resolve very easily. For example, a thin velvet fabric of some sort inside the lens hood can easily prevent the hood from scratching the lens.

Do you recommend the LLL 28mm 9e? It's great to learn about the updates they've made from the original model. However, I'm still on the hunt for more details and comparisons with other 28mm lenses in the same price range, like the new ones from Voigtlander and others.
I recall Fred mentioning he was planning to review the LLL 28mm 9e, but it's been quite a while, and oddly enough, there still isn't much info about the lens online.

I don't think I'm in a position of making recommendation to anyone. Everyone has his/her likes and dislikes and we all have our own use case with our gears. With my limited time of using it, I like what I'm getting out of this lens for street photography. The sharpness, the colour rendition, contrast, distortion level...all look good to my eyes. I have never used the original Leica Nine Element so I can't comment on the comparison.
Comes to think of it, I can make a recommendation on this lens. Don't use the included hood. Go buy an inexpensive threaded hood with cap. ;-)

What caused the scratches, the claws not retracting fully?
I have been super careful to make sure I have pressed the tabs fully and the claws were fully retracted before very slowly and carefully slided the hood onto the lens.
When you have two pieces of metal and you slide one onto the other, it's very easy to cause scratches. And this can be easily resolve by having a thin layer of velvet or rubber to provide padding between the two metal pieces coming into direct contact with each other which could prevent scratching damages. Of course, this will involve a slightly more gap between the hood and the lens which depends on the thickness of the velvet padding. A slight redesign on the hood dimension would be needed.
I have talked to the shop where I bought all my LLL lens fr. They are going to pass on my findings to LLL. Hopefully, they will look into the issue and make changes for future products.
My orders of 3rd party threaded hood with cap should be here very soon...

Is the material of the lens brass under the scratches? If so, the scratches over time might look like a nice ringed patina.
Light Lens Lab is teasing a new 50mm f2 that just might be a black summicron v2 dual range like.
I wouldn’t mind since Fred has recommanded me that lens a number of times when I was looking for a poor man’s Summilux but was always rebuted by its shiny chrome aspect and the fact that they are still expensive when you look at how badly they are damaged.

It’s supposed to be a rigid remake. Focuses down to 0.7 though, which will be nice. I’m definitely interested in this one as well. Sometime in 2025 (maybe 2026 for the APO) they still have the 35 AA and APO coming out. They’re cranking out solid lenses fast

The weight on the 8e is listed as “206g to 261g (depending on different finishes)”
Is there info somewhere on which finishes are which weight?
You’d have to email them and ask to be sure, but the extra weight could be the brass lens hood and filter that’s included with some of the special editions.
Edit: I forgot about the new stainless steel model, that might be heavier
