Judging from the previous responses, this is quite the popular support apparatus! You can add two more to the list, as Shibu shoots almost exclusively with his monopod and MH-100, and I have one as well that I use when I leave the tripod at home.

If you are referring to the Wimberley MH-100, I got one a while ago. I don't use monopod much. My last two trips to Conowingo since my 600 GM arrived, I just hand held.

Handholding during the actual action for 10-20 seconds is one thing but waiting for the action to take place for minutes, 5-10 or longer minutes, is a completely different beast. Must be nice to be young... or at least younger .

I handhold exclusively at Conowingo and most other places (500 II with 2x). I just have a BlackRapid shoulder strap for when there's no action happening.

Beautiful shots of the hummers, Joshua!

Believe me, I can't hand hold the 600 GM for more than a few minutes. But at Conowingo, I don't really need to hold it up for too long. When I see an eagle or eagles fly over and look like they may be about to do something, I lift the lens up and locate the bird in the view finder. Usually the action will be over pretty quickly if they are catching fish. There is no need to hold the lens up for more than a few minutes to wait for something to happen. At least that's my observation with respect to shooting eagles at Conowingo.

My 600 GM has finally gotten some usage in the last 10 days or so. Here are some of the shots, also posted in several other threads but not this 600 M thread.

Ah, yes, thank you. I am using a strap, too, otherwise, it would be impossible for me to handle the lens/camera combo without it. In addition to that, I like the idea of using a strap as an added safeguard to prevent or at least, minimize mishaps from happening. But I was referring more to the time, the few minutes when we anticipate the action to occur, let’s say during a take off.

Thank you very. much, Douglas! Yes, that combo is superb alright but the skill of the person behind the camera plays a more significant role in nailing those wonderful shots. Awesome, keep it up, Douglas!

Great shots, Douglas! You’ve already become quite adept with your new a1 + 600GM combo! Of course, the talent has always been there, but now you’ve got the gear to really let it shine!

Yesterday afternoon. The White Eyed Vireo has been traditionally tough to capture due to the fact that they love the thickets and I never get an unobstructed view of one

Sorry this is not really image related but I thought I would get the best answers from folks who actually have the 600mm GM. On mine I am using the Lenscoat cover on the lens, it seems to be very protective because it's thick. But also because of the thickness, when i put the 3-D print lens hood in reverse position, it's pretty tight and takes a bit of effort to squeeze in. I am wondering what lens cover you folks are using on your 600 GM? I see RolandPro and some other skin type covers are being used as well.

None. I used 'em on other big primes in the past, but I find that they're just not needed. We pay a premium for the light weight of this lens, so adding weight doesn't appeal to me.

I'm using the Rolan Pro cover (I bought mine of AliExpress). I'm able to reverse Jon's 3D printed lens hood. Although it isn't a great fit reversed. I have the rubber edging material I added on the lip which restricts things more. I think Jon designed a new version that accommodates that rubber stripping better but I have the original version before I added the rubber stripping myself. However, I got a very short version of that hood and I can just squeeze it into my F-stop XL ICU so I leave it in the shooting position.

With all that said, I'm not sure if the Rolan Pro would solve your issue. I think it is less than thick than the LensCoat but I'm not certain. It is not neoprene like the Lens Coat. It is a rugged fabric. I like it better than LensCoat.

+1 on the Rolanpro cover. Using it with the 3D printed hood. So far it seems to be fine.

For me the downside of the Rolanpro is that the function hold button along with the focusing ring when trying to activate the zoom function for MF/peaking. The cover seems to inhibit that a little bit. No enough for me to remove those sections though.

It clears the rolanpro without the edging mentioned. I use the rolanpro cover as well as I can't stand the clear window of the lenscoat. If you want pm me and we can talk about an even wider hood.
