Hound running straight at you vs. bierd flying straight at you....difference? Tony's hound looks mighty fast. Why wonder? Well a couple reviewers mentioned a lesser ability to AF/AF-C track an object moving quickly toward you. I'd think at 20fps over 2-3 seconds if 3-4 of 60 frames are dropped I could live
with it
So far it just looks like a continuation of Sony excellence.

The physical movement speed required of the focus motor varies a lot with distance. E.g. distant birds will be much easier to follow than your own dog practically running into you. And then there is swallows, which you won't be able to even keep in view unless you walk away from them...

Swallow testing is scheduled on Friday...on Sunday there were 75 young Barn Swallows lined up on the railing waiting to be fed by the adults that were constantly hunting. The young ones fly a bit slower than their parents but are still a challenge. Sunday was iffy light and the D500/500PF failed a lot of the time...only a few keepers out of 1000 shots. This week should be sunny so will be able to compare 100-400GM and 200-600 on a fairly challenging subject. I've shot swallows at this spot with A9/100-400 before and it does pretty well but once I add 1.4TC to get better reach the hit rate drops. I think bare 200-600 at 600 or a little less on the A9 will be ideal IF the AF can keep up because the best shots only happen as the swallow starts to get fairly close and that is where other reviews say the 200-600 AF starts to falter.....I shall see....

We did a hike in Katmai and at one point were literally surrounded by coastals, all of them ranging from 20-40 feet away. Not a one paid any attention to us after a glance to see we were no threat...all busy catching/eating fish as fast as possible and defending their catches.
Not that I'm relaxed but a bull moose way more scares me.

I think he refers to focal length markings, covered by lenscoat.
Talking about the hawk, am I alone to see that it looks too little defined, maybe a heavy crop? (I know A9 does not feature the same detail as A7RIII, I have A9 too)

It was a crop and also 338mm hence the question about the markings being covered. I didn't realize it as I was shooting these fast and furious little hawks. I may trim that area of the lenscoat.

Oh come on Geoff where is your confidence .........................you and the A9 with the 200-600 will make a team I think what Birdie said was it seems to slow at MFD which I doubt your swallows will be at Are you going to test @ 400 to compare the two then stretch it out to compare to the 100-400 with TC to see how AF works out?

Have you ever tried photographing a nighthawk in flight?
I think what Birdie said was it seems to slow at MFD which I doubt your swallows will be at
