Sorry, but if those shots are indicative of your disappointment with loss of detail, I would suggest that is due to your shooting and post-processing skills, not due to the A9.

Pretty well most cameras made in the last ten years will produce better detailed shots than those. As for best AF settings, there are a number of threads already on that subject, as well as on the Sony website.

Oh don't get me wrong … I agree with that! I'm way behind many many here in the skill department.

The biggest reason in my view is simply that I was far away from the subject, hence these are big crops, hence loss of detail as compared to higher res bodies. Seems pretty common sense. I wasn't complaining about the camera …

And speaking of that … one skill that doesn't get much attention in these discussions, but seems of paramount importance is just that … getting close. Has zero to do with what gear you are carrying.

That shot with the 100-400 and 1.4TC is nice. Lots of detail.

Has anybody compared it with Sigma 60-600?

Douglas owned the 60-600. He can spell out the details on where each lens shines....or doesn't.

I owed the Sigma 60-600 before I owned the Sony 200-600, so not direct, controlled comparison. In my opinion, the sharpness of both lenses are about the same and it should not be the deciding factor in choosing which one.

Here is how I see it from my perspective:

Sony: lighter but bulkier to pack, better AF

Sigma: Better FL range. I go to a lot of airshows and know 200mm of the Sony can be too long sometimes. Push/pull zooming can be even quicker than the Sony 200-600's short throw zooming. The Sigma is heavier, and feels even heavier when it's at 600mm.

At the end of the day, I felt native AF is more important to me. I am wiling to sacrifice the FL range for better AF, plus the Sony 200-600 takes the 1.4 TC pretty well.

Now, if Sigma made an FE 60-600, that would be a much harder decision...

Thank you for the detailed reply.

I figured that in terms of sharpness they might be the same as I have not had any issues with Sigma at 600mm. Where I'm struggling is AF. Last week I took the lens along with me on a duck hunt and I noticed that lens (or maybe it was me) was struggling getting sharp BIFs. Even when all the AF boxes were dancing on the bird, I came out with less than tack sharp pictures. Though at same settings, on static subject IQ is amazing.

The issue with Sony is that it starts at 200mm, which is probably not a big deal for hunting trips as most of the pictures are at the long end but that also mean that I will have to carry an extra lens to cover for closer/group shots, which is not always ideal when you are sitting in a cramped duck blind.

I do like that Sony can take TCs, which can come in handy and since it does not negatively effect AF on A9, is a big plus as well.

Now that I have the A7R IV AF settings dialed in the 200-600mm is great with the 1.4X TC

Yes these were from today at the dam

As to AF settings, many of these came from Mukesh (ke3vg) so thanks again to him

- AFC
- Zone tracking (don't use tracking with flexible spot!!!)
- Tracking sensitivity set to 1
- Shutter speed - minimum 1/2500,
- Aperture - wide open,
- Image format: RAW
- White balance - Auto or daylight if consistently sunny
- Shooting mode: Manual - do not use ETTR as AF seems to drop off with over exposure in my mind so ISO 640 to 800 max with sun and eagles at f9 and 1/2500th
- EVF to fast refresh
- H or H+ continuous... I like H better as it easier for me to track but YMMV
- Pre AF off
- Creative style is off for me but others have suggested on and standard with sharpness bumped to +2

Oh and I forgot to mention EFCS is ON
