Hey guys, please don't kick me hard. I was always shy to ask but what is the point to shoot birds? Is there money in it? Seems like a huge investment and requires time and dedication.
Fell into it after getting hauled off from work by an ambulance with chestpain quite a few years ago, luckily nothing serious but decided to try and get out more for exercise. Slippery slope down into insanity followed, seeing wildlife I had never really made much notice of before, taking an old DLSR along to try and capture it and in the end figuring out that my weekly birding walks has turned into my "decompress" time.

I used to hunt with guns and bows and arrows but now use a camera lens. Started out wanting to shoot wildlife and shot birds because they were always accessible. It grabs you and holds on. Investment is likely about the same or less than hunting.
This has been my journey as well. I grew up as an avid hunter and got an itch to start photographing what I saw in nature, which led to my interest in photography originally. I have since branched out into enjoy multiple types of photography, but I'm still primarily focused on trying to capture the beauty I see in the world.

I'd love to see some more shutter speeds revealed here in use of those shots that all seem so nice and sharp. I'm finding a need to keep things at or above 1/2000th to nail focus. Is that supposed to be "normal"? Or what has been the typical lower shutter speeds allowed for a sharp shot handheld

I shoot a little differently than others.
Mostly, when I lift the camera to my eye, I'm taking three shots. (with one push on the shutter button)
At these lower speeds, I need to let the o.s.s. settle down, and I don't always do that, so the first shot is blurred.
The second shot, the o.s.s. has settled, the movement from pressing the shutter is over, so the second shot should look better than the first.
The third shot is a bonus, although it could still be better than the first two.
Anyway, out of three shots, one of them should look pretty good.
On faster shutter speeds, I still do this, but ,all (most of the time) of the photos will be sharp.

Thanks for that input. I do hold up the lens long enough I feel the stability is there. I need to investigate my abilities of getting clear shots at speeds below 1/1000th. I'll report back if I have any success doing so.

Just picked up a copy of this lens off the B&S boards to pair with my A1 for use with motorsports, field sports, and hopefully an airshow. Have only had a brief amount of time to test it out but am impressed. While I commend Tamron & Sigma for coming out with similar lenses, the build, handling, AF, and ability to use TC's for this lens to me makes it a no-brainer, especially if you can find a clean used one.

It really is a tremendous value that none of the competition has in it's price range. Nikon has nothing similar, Canon has the 100-500 f7.1 which is no sharper, is a touch slower and a pump style telescoping build that is long to throw when zooming. It also has limitations when using a TC ( cannot zoom in past 300mm or so). Add that the Canon is also more expensive and you realize the value offered in the Sony 200-600! Speaking of Tamron or Sigma.. they're speed limited and max out at approx 10FPS, therefore very limiting on a fast body like the a9 or A1 series

The A1+200-600 is the best combo for airshows, in my opinion, very sharp and versatile. Although I have also used the A1+600 GM+1.4 TC as another setup for real closeup shots, the 200-600 is my go to lens for airshows.
