Always have the camera with you, never know what you will encounter. Just checking the mail and this guy/gal landed in a mesquite tree near the cluster box.

Hey guys, please don't kick me hard. I was always shy to ask but what is the point to shoot birds? Is there money in it? Seems like a huge investment and requires time and dedication.

It is a good reason and pictures come out nice and interesting. But is there something else I'm missing?
It odd that you don't get this. Look around you. Everyone has different interests. Some people mountain bike, some people climb, some people restore cars, some people fly planes, some people collect baseball hats, some people fly around the country to watch their favorite sports team in different stadiums.
Bird photography gets me out of the house and visiting locations I might not visit. It's a little like hunting except instead of strapping a dear accros the hood, you come back with photographs.

I used to hunt with guns and bows and arrows but now use a camera lens. Started out wanting to shoot wildlife and shot birds because they were always accessible. It grabs you and holds on. Investment is likely about the same or less than hunting.

I don’t shoot birds but do know some hunters & agree that the reasoning is similar for many. Get out in nature & see what you can track down. Same for fishing in some ways too.
When I go hiking as well as other various trips it’s sometimes similar, only instead of coming back with a pic of an animal it’s a cool landscape or other image depending on where I am.
For me I “get it” while still having no interest in it
