Andy,
The cloud around the jets in your last two shots of this series is not necessarily due to the jets flying close to the speed of sound. In these last two shots, both jets are under "load" meaning the pilot is pulling back on the stick and the jets are probably experiencing 5, 6, 7, 8 or more "G's". It's the effect of G-loading on the wings, and as the other commenter mentioned, during higher humidity. Under high G's the air gets compressed and forms visible condensation, a cloud. The cloud looks turbulent and it is due to the massive g's on the jets.
In your first shots, none of the jets are flying under high g load, probably closer to just 1 or 1 1/2 g's, but if they fly fast enough and approach or reach the sound barrier, during high humidity, the shock cone or shock wave can be visible.
So, two different effects leading to visible moisture in the air.

How are you finding the A1 and 200-600 in general, sounds like early days but interested. What had you previously been using?
I've been a Nikon shooter my whole career. I didn't switch to mirrorless until the Z9 came out. The ergonomics aren't working for me. I've shot a pro body for years but since having surgery on my right arm last year I'm having trouble holding the gripped bodies, D5/gripped D850, and now Z9. I love the A1 for my arm plus, ironically, I actually prefer the controls to the Nikon bodies. Unfortunately Nikon has a wider selection of lens options so it's a dilemma. My plan for now is to use the Z9/prime lenses tripod mounted and use the A1/200-600 as my hand held option.

Interesting, thank you for that. I ruined my back a few years ago so weight is something I need to consider, I have enjoyed the larger Nikon bodies over the years but am well aware of the Sony A1 capabilities also. At the moment I am looking to purchase the A1/200-600 as my only wildlife kit, ideally I would like a 600f4 but this is not my day job, only a hobby, budget is limited!
Nikon certainly have some interesting primes out now with the 800PF and 400f4.5 which makes it harder to pick a 'winning' brand.

Then again AFAIK those are both STM lenses. Not sure I'd fancy those for faster BIF.
PS: just noticed that this is the image thread, not exactly fitting for brand comparisons, sry
