Still going through all the images, but here are a handful from this year's SF Fleetweek Airshow.

The A9/200-600mm makes a great airshow combo. If I had to list a negative, I would say I have too many images to cull through.😉

I absolutely agree on the a9 + 200-600. I shot the air show on Friday with that combo, and was pleased to find nearly all images were tack sharp. I ended up with about 5k images, and it was a lot of work to go through all of them, but I was pleased that I had so many choices.

Hi all,
a newbie on the Sony Forum.

Been speaking to several stalwarts on the FM and am gradually making the switch to preowned A9 and 200-600

Quick question - the hood on the 200-600 is not as firm and does not click in place as on the Canon, meaning it moved a bit freely even though i screw it on. Does everyone have the experience?

probably posted in the wrong tread, sorry

I am amazed that you were able to capture the jet at such slow shutter speed. I credit technique and luck?

If the hood is mounted onto the lens properly, it should click into place once it reaches the locking postion.

I figured it out, needed to put more pressure to have it click in place.

That first shot of the F-35 was actually a mistake in settings. I was photographing the Lucas Oil biplane (which has a propeller) before that. But I forgot to change my settings back for the F-35.

It was a couple of passes before I realized my mistake. Fortunately, I still got some sharp images at 1/250th.

I was there on Saturday and Sunday. Must be nice attending on Friday. I imagine it’s a lot less crowded! 😀

My first and only Magpie in flight.
Notice the funky colors. Only thing I can guess is that at the time there was huge amounts of smoke in the air (Sterling Alaska and all the huge wildfires nearby/visibility 1/4 mile/etc.).
But no Magpies anywhere close to me here in Appalachia, so glad to have seen one.

Around me (Italy) tons of magpies, but nowhere close to photograph them as good as you, even perching... Great job man!

Man you are too kind. I wouldn't even call that a good capture, but it was my first and it was moving haha! I hear that the Magpie is mischievous and would love to see their antics in my backyard. Looking at the environment we found this one in (Alaska) I wonder why they haven't made there way to my neck of the woods....very similar climate (very cold bitter winters, lots of snow, ice, fog, wind, hail and tons of rainy weeks.

Maybe it won't win WPOTY 2020 but it is still a good capture, which I am aiming at

OK had to google WPOTY 2020
Nah to competition. Enough of that from my co-workers. Egos fluffed. A bit of that here at FM too.

Crowds were not too bad on Friday, everyone pretty laid back and enjoying the show.

Talking about WPOTY, I saw this picture from a guy I follow on Flickr, he was or is still a Canon shooter, but he shot this picture with the A9 and the 200-600.

The theme is quite similar to the recent WPOTY.

I live in the vicinity of the Richmond bridge and that is too far away to shoot the air show. Most of the planes stay over the city or just in area of the bay between the GG bridge and Alcatraz. I have shot a few practice flights from home, but the files are just not great due to haze and distance.

Between the haze, sun location and poor long lens technique on my part this was about as good as I got from the Marin side. I'm curious if the panning mode on this lens influences the IS much. I left it on mode 1 all day and I'm seeing a small amount of blur in a lot of shots that I wouldn't expect from my experiences with Nikon/canon long lenses in the past. The jets were coming over my location rather quickly and I was swinging the camera around pretty wildly to keep up.

Hate to say that but it doesn't look sharp to me, and your shutter speed was more than fast enough for that even if your panning skill was not up there. The airshow season in our region is over so I can't try the A7RIV+200-600 combo for that. I tried the A7RIII and 200-600 combo 6 or 7 weeks ago, it worked great.

If its hazy that will make it tough. The other thing from that shot too is that when shooting from behind those jets, the heat distortion can kill shots. I had great luck with the a9/200-600 at an airshow. I could see AF being a concern with jets coming head on. I don't think equipment or technique is to blame for that shot being soft.

Was this from Saturday? Because the atmospheric conditions were pretty poor that day. That, and shooting from the Marin side of the bay. That’s probably as good as you can expect given those conditions.

I don’t think your technique or using IS mode 1 was a major factor. You made the best of suboptimal conditions. Sometimes, that’s all you can do.
