Spectacular images!

How do you find the A7RIV? Have you tried BIF with that?

Thanks.

No BIF yet. Just got the camera a few days ago. The weather is all clouds and rain for the next five days so not sure if I will be able to get any BIF testing done this weekend or not. I will try to but right now mostly only have gulls and some ducks to test on.

I haven't solidified my thoughts yet on the A7RIV....I'm finding shutter speeds do need to be kept up higher than I'd like to have consistently sharp shots at 1:1 view (which is to be expected). But that means ISO has to go up and then noise is going up...then we start to loose the resolution advantage. I also think with slower lenses like 200-600 that diffraction is probably starting to hurt realized resolution gains. I shot a little with 400DOII at f/4 yesterday and those images were pretty amazing at f/4.

I think the A7RIV will be best with a lens like 400 f/2.8 or 600 f/4. Not sure if the 200-600 is the best option for this camera. I think after all the little things add up you will end up with no better IQ than A9 and with worse AF and lower FPS.

I haven't made a decision yet but I'm leaning towards returning A7RIV and getting A9II as I do like the new ergonomics (although I almost find the grip too deep and too much space with the battery grip attached)...but the wheels and buttons are a nice improvement.

Also I've been shooting mostly in APS-C 26MP mode as shooting full mode (even with 12 bit compressed RAW) the camera is very slow to write and files are hard to manage in LR...

So far blackout and slideshow hasn't bothered me much for static birds but again I really need to try some flight work and see what it is like to track along with the bird.

Partial OT: I am still uncertain what to do... A9 won't go anywhere but my bag, but 100-400 GM is constantly on the just-right-or-short side... but I'm not sure I want the bulk of 200-600 (which is constantly darker than 100-400 too), I would change all my bags but my big backpack (which should contain 400/2.8 GM mounted on gripped A9) ... and "gain" some weight too ... I am still leaning toward getting 1.4x, even if using it means losing a full stop. But I think that, in the wait for an A9R I could save some money towards 1.4x instead of pairing my 100-400 with 200-600. /OT

I hope weather let you test BIF in the next days with A7RIV, you are just great in your imagery!

Great info! I’ve been contemplating picking up a A74.

I would love to hear your thoughts once you tried some BIF.

Beautiful shots by the way!

Haze also caused atmospheric shimmering. And the air pollution from those jet exhausts was terrible. Later in the evening the air cleared somewhat for some night shots of the bridge.

Possibly of interest to some.

I bought the Tenba 10L Sling. You'd think the A7Riv+100400 would fit.
It doesn't

Won't work for most of you even if you wanted it to. The collapsible rubber hood is the key.
The up side is that unzip, pull out, turn on and shoot (I don't use lens cap generally, instead using a sacrificial B+W UV filter that screws into the rubber hood). No hood to reverse and attach. Simply extend the hood or not.

So why the sling? In places like Circle Bar B, Savanah NWR, Harris Neck, etc. Poof will walk me 4-6 miles. Smaller bag means I won't try to pack stuff I don't need or won't use. I can get another small lens inside, something like the 35/1.8 would be fine...but that gets in the way of pulling and shooting. But that lens would easily fit a coat pocket.

Better news for my style. We're headed to Florida in a couple of months to hit up some of the popular venues for a few days to thaw out. In Alaska/Yukon nightly I'd back up with the One-Mix 3s Platinum to a Samsung T-5. Worked a charm. The One-Mix 3s will fit in the outside pocket of the Tenba 3L. Here's the One-Mix for those who might be curious about it, for size reference that is a Tamron 28-75 beside it-

So for a Florida trip where I won't be taking anything for landscaping this is an easy rig to fly with (goes under the seat in front of me on Delta) even on the CRJ 900 we fly out on.

Not the greatest image quality, but after getting skunked all day, when I saw this American Kestrel on the way home in the truck, I threw the anchors out, pulled over and walked across to the other side of the road with a9 and 200-600 in hand (+1.4 attached).
The bird was waaaaaaay out in the middle of a field, perched on an old, fallen oak tree. I took an initial snap just in case, then walked down the grassy bank to the muddy farm field. I managed to get around some standing water (no rubber boots with me) and began walking towards the falcon, stopping every once in a while getting closer shots. It flew off waaaaaay too soon, so this image was heavily cropped, and lamentably, the auto ISO went to 4000. Could have been so much better.

We've had loads of miserable weather lately, and more to come, so not happy.

Interesting looking bag Robert.

I don’t use a rubber hood like you. Do you think it’s possible to fit an A9/200-600mm with the hood reversed?

I do think so...just get it on Amazon for easy return if it doesn't suit you.
I'd offer to try but cannot find the OEM hood
I had the rubber before the lens arrived. Hid the hood first day I opened 200600 box...would take 2 hours to find the darned ting. I've rubber'ed the 500PF and just recently the 300PF. I'm a fan of rubber

I was just looking at the bag on Amazon. 😀

I have way too many bags. But I do like the minimalist size of the 10L.

Alright. You talked me into it. (Not that I needed much convincing) 😉

Appreciate the post Robert. Looks like a nice bag!
