I was lucky enough to come across this American Kestrel while it was hunting. I just missed a series of it diving into the grass ...but I was able to capture a few stationary shots.
That is a beautiful shot! Since I have the latest A7RIVa for all general shooting, I am thinking of adding a 200-600g to my Sony kit. I shoot Nikon for birding/wildlife with D500+500pf and am on the list for a Z9, but that may take many months. I would like to have a bit more reach for a trip beginning of may, and since the 1.4tc does not work well the 500pf.
So in short, is the 1.4tc worthwhile on the A7RIV+200-600g combo for e.g. wading birds, so moving about, but not rapidly, to get just that bit more reach?
The 200-600g is relatively affordable and the A7RIV is a terrific camera. I never went that route though, because of all the bad reports on this combo, but I have read several reports that the new A7RIVa model has no such problems with the 200-600 lens. When I see images from the A7RIV+200-600G, they look very good in general. But my question is, if the 1.4tc has added value over cropping?

In my experience the 200-600 with 1.4 TC works very well. Still excellent IQ and good focus performance. The one caveat is that there must be enough light. I shoot this combo on an a1 not a7RIVa.

The short answer, Yes, it's worth having the 1.4 tc.
If you look through the shots in this thread, a lot of people use the 1.4 tc.
With modern cameras, losing the stop of light isn't like it was 10 years.
The cameras focus better, and have less noise, so the fear of losing a stop doesn't mean what it did.
I don't always have the tc on my set up, but I do use it quite a bit in certain area that I go to for photos.
I can't think of a shot that I missed because of the tc being mounted.
I've used this combo, lens and tc on 5 different cameras, the a7R3, a6400, a9, a7R4 and the latest a74.
It worked well on all of my cameras.

Some fantastic frames on this thread...
I received my A1 + 200-600 almost a week ago, but I did not get a chance to take it out until today. But as my luck goes, I got busy with other things most of the day and I could only arrive at a local pond just a short time before sunset when it was cloudy and already dark.
So managed to take only a few frames, and no opportunities at all for any flight frames, except the one shown below where this Northern Shoveler decided to take off in the "wrong" direction! Also in 3 and 5 below, I have no idea how I missed that my shutter speed was unnecessarily too high resulting in 12800 ISO but then again, I am happy to see that even at 12800 ISO, the images seem fairly usable.
Given the circumstances, I can say that my new gear didn't disappoint...

In my experience, No. I stopped using TC with 200-600.
I find it easier to shoot without it, being able to shoot at wider apertures, and cropping instead in post (using Adobe Raw Enhance on some images).
IMHO, the loss of light and IQ is not worth it, especially if you are using a high megapixel camera and you can crop well.
If you look at the last page (as of today) on the following thread, one FM-er who shoots with a7RIV + 200-600,
had AF issues and was considering ditching the combo, instead reports that after changing 2 settings,
he is now seeing much better AF. In case anyone else is having issues, please check his message out (user name JeetND).
