I returned my first copy to B&H. It was sharp when it nailed the focus. But it was more misses than hits. After privately chatting with a few others who also seemed to have had this issue, I returned the lens. It was a delight to shoot for sure, and produced great results when it hit, so I kept the a6600 and will look for a sharp copy of the 200-600 here on FM. Plus, seeing all these excellent images on this thread tells me it is a great lens.

Looking at a side and backlit Great Egret in breeding plumage.
Cropped mainly from the top and a bit from the left, tripod mounted 200-600mm G set to 600mm and A7rIII; silent shutter.
ISO 100, f6.3, 1/250 second.
Exposure Corrected +0.20 Stops.

Anil, if the lens is sharp when it nails focus then there is nothing wrong with the optics. Chances are there are other and probably more important factors at play than just the optical performance. Getting another sharp copy of the lens doesn’t seem to be the solution though…

Be cautious... There have been cases of sensor misalignment. Unless you've tested the lense with more than one body it is difficult to tell. Good luck

I did not have enough time to buy another Sony body and test the lens, before I hit the road. I wish I did. So my best option was to return lens to store for full refund, and redo this after my roadtrip which I am on atm. Awesome owl photo.

Oh, I see. So the camera body also needs to be tested with another lens. When it nailed the focus, the images are very sharp. Its just something off somewhere with focus .. and it was not consistently front or back focusing, so I decided to return the lens, and retry in a few weeks. Its such a nice lens, and the a6600 focusing seems great.

Finally decided to try turning off OSS altogether for BIF, and think it's made a big difference in sharpness over Mode 3 (although I just feel like I'm having a stroke looking through the twitchy viewfinder )
