I got this one late last year; price has gone up dramatically and can be used with other lenses and for different purposes and much smaller and lighter than my RRS Full Gimbal:

The head is modular; the handle doesn't need to be used, the support for under the lens (an L support) can be removed or added to save weight and allowing the lens to be side mounted and to be used with a camera L bracket for usage for other lenses, panoramic work, etc. It like most Gimbal heads work best if you have

Thanks Rich, interesting.

The problem with my Gimbal head was that it had no resistance when swinging from left to right or up and down.
So I got a fluid head where I can set the resistance I need for a smooth motion.

Can I set something similar with this head?

Thanks again, K-H.

Hi K-H,

With the Fotopro E-6H Eagle Series Gimbal Head the rotation around has some resistance but is quite smooth. It can be turned and adjusted for click stops for when you wish to take panoramic photos so that each position clicks in place. Of course you can also lock the base so that unit does not pan at all.

As to up and down, you can have the unit set quite smooth so it is basically fluid though you can adjust at least some of the resistance but I am not sure how fine the adjustment can be made.

You do not need to use the L bracket to support the lens and this can be removed for mounting lenses with the long plate to be mounted on their side and to also mount your camera L bracket to the clamp which can rotate. Removing the L bracket will also lower the weight of the unit itself.

Additionally there is a button on the back of the head that allows you to position your lens and camera forward and backward to better position your gear. You can also switch and rotate the whole head 180 degrees to better work with certain set-ups including with nodal or focusing rails.

You may wish to look at Dan Carr's review (there are others) where he reviews the head with the Fotopro Eagle E-6 tripod. The head can be purchased alone or the tripod can be purchased with the head, but no alone.

https://shuttermuse.com/fotopro-eagle-tripod-and-gimbal-review/

If you want the tripod with the head you may wish to purchase it here, but I am not sure if Joe has it in stock right now; he has some of the best pricing and I purchased the head last year from him when they had a special deal and I purchased the head for $75 off for as I recall about $375; at the time the head was selling for $449 but China has had a problem due to Covid 19 and they raised the price now to the current price for the head of $529.

https://www.joebradyphotography.com/joe-s-favorite-photo-gear

See Joe's price at the bottom of the page if you are interested in the tripod with the head. There is also a larger Eagle E7 with the same head. I am not sure really what the real weight rating is for the 2 tripods as it really doesn't make much sense why they rate one tripod for one weight and the other for another weight.

Thank you very much, Nelson! Sorry for the late reply; I was out of town for several days...

I had a full fledged Wimberley gimbal head that I sold and bought a Jobu Jr 3 Deluxe gimbal head in its place, which is basically the smallest and lightest gimbal head that can support my 600mm GM plus 2X TC.

Thank you very much, Douglas! I consider myself lucky to be able to follow and photograph the development of two peregrine falcon nests fairly local to me. Without traffic, like in the weekend, it is about 1+ hour each way from me. But the number of photographers can be a fairly high and we sometimes scramble for the best position. I would rather do it during the week but the traffic in Southern California could easily make the ride like 2 hours one way.

Those are wonderful hummingbird images, Douglas! And your air show images in the big FE image thread are just superb!

The head is light-weight which fit my reason for coming to Sony from Canon, to lighten the load. I have the side mount version which I never thought I would be comfortable with. I do have a tether on the head that attaches to the lens but I'm comfortable without it now. I am able to adjust how stiff or loose the pan or up and down swing is by tightening or loosening the knobs that control those and they hold without any movement. It is a very well-built head. I have been pleased with it. I believe it has increased in price a little from the $399 I paid but not by much. I use it on a Feisol Tournament CF tripod.

Hi Bill,

Actually Promediagear increased the price of the Katana Jr. a fair amount.

The side mounted version that you have/are using is now $535

https://promediagear.com/collections/gimbal-heads/products/gkjrc-katana-pro-gimbal-head-telephoto-lens-side-mount-clamp

and the GKJr. Katana Pro Gimbal Tripod Head with the extra support under the lens is now $650

So what's the verdict on this lens? Dustin Abbott really likes it, but sample variation on zooms is such that I take any review with a tablespoon of salt.

I haven't heard much about sample variation in the 200-600. I sold one some weeks ago thinking I wouldn't need it since I just bought the 600 GM. But I missed the close MFD of the 200-600 for the hummingbirds just outside my study's window, so I bought one back!

Unlike wide angle prime or zoom lenses, the 200-600mm lens is more designed to perform well in the center to capture 3-dimensional targets and as such, the corner performance doesn’t play much of a role, if any. If you take a look at the images posted here, nobody seems to care about the corners not being sharp since they are not in the same plane anyway.

Great going Douglas.

The FE 100-400 GM has even closer MFD.
