Wow, these are amazing. Speaking as someone who does not have these kinds of opportunities to photograph eagles, I loved seeing your shots.

Thank you, Dan! Are you tired of bald eagles yet?

A couple shots with the A7RIV of two bald eagles fighting over a fish yesterday morning.

I have gone to Conowingo three mornings in a row, shot with both the A9 and the A7RIV. My observation is the A9 definitely acquires target faster and sticks with the target better with busy backgrounds, the 20 FPS sure gives me more shots to choose when eagles snatch fish out of the water. But the A7RIV just gives you so much room to crop! A lot of the eagle actions are pretty far away

Hello,

this is my first post on FM forums, so hello from me I am a keen reader rather a poster and I have been following FM forums for a while. More often from this 2020 spring when I bought my first telephoto lens and started my photography journey. I have owned a camera (non smartphone) for 2,5 years now but I have really started taking pictures when I bought the 200-600 G lens. Soon after I got the lens I updated the body from a7II which had a very medicore AF system. At that time I already knew I was sucked into animal photography!

The pictures you post here are awesome! I do not have too many pictures in my collection yet but slowly I am working on that as I learn more and more about animal behaviors and photography. So here are few of my shots I like and I hope you will like them too

I have some more pictures on instagram and facebook, please visit and if you have any tips I will be glad to listen. I am also watching several photographers I found here on this forum, awesome pictures ! It is easy to tell from this 200-600g topic whom I speak about

P.S. Images resized by flickr to 1000 something pixels. Original files are larger but I do not want to 'scroll' the forum.
P.S.S Damn uploading images here was tough! had several goes.

Thank you! Conowingo Dam in Maryland is one of the best locations anywhere to photograph bald eagles catching fish. There are around 70 of therm there right now, the number could get up to several hundred.

Some shots of a cormorant trying to swallow his catch (a carp?), it took 6 or 7 minutes for the bird to get the fish sort of down his throat, from a distance I saw the fish tail sticking out from the bird's mouth for a long time, not sure how long it took to get the whole fish down. These were shot with the A7RIV, big crop.

Welp, I see what you mean — heck, I now see that it even says on google Maps, “prominent dam with bald eagles.” Is this seasonal or are they all hanging out there year around? Maybe I can get out there some time.

It just looks painful to see that cormorant trying to choke down that fish.

By no means I am knowledgeable about Conowingo, based on my understanding, the best season is from late Oct to late Jan, the bonus of going in Oct and early Nov is you get the beautiful foliage background like these shots below and you are not freezing your a$$ off standing by the water for hours. I heard March and April are good too but I have never gone in March or April myself. Some of the eagles there are residents but some come down from the north for the winter. The gate to the parking lot opens at 5:00 AM, on weekends you would want to get there by 5:30 to have a very good chance of getting a parking spot, the lot can park about 60 cars, I think. This past Monday I got there at 9:00, they were only two parking spots left. During non Covid time they run a shutter bus to bring people from the visitor center to the dam if the dam's parking lot is full, the shutter bus is not running right now. The energy company is doing all these (parking, potty johns, public area maintenance) free of charge to the visitors.

Welcome. Nice set of photos. If you plan on uploading more shots on a consistent basis, consider paying a fee for the ability to upload directly to FM. It is a great way to support the site, and Fred's efforts here.

All of the images in this thread are stunning. Hats off to you guys. I think I’m going to get this lens and the 1.4 TC. I have never done bird/wildlife photography, but you guys have inspired me.

Love the composition of the eagle pair, birdied.
