p.153 #1 · Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G Image Thread

Went out back yesterday morning to see if the warblers were still migrating through, but it was eerily quiet, and no activity in the brush. I looked up and found the explanation. I'm guessing this is a rough legged hawk. He was obviously on the hunt, and when he located his target in the nearby woods, he took off like a rocket. He dove quickly into deep woods, and somehow the A9 managed to track it right through the trees, but my own skill wasn't up to making it work. The last image may lack the usual features of a good bird image, but I like it anyway, in sort of Halloween sort of way. I like images that reveal a bird's behavior in its habitat, and here clearly is a fast and stealthy hunter in the woods.

The hawk flew northeast, so I walked the other direction. Not long after, some chikadees decided it was safe, and came out to hunt insects. They are almost always the first birds out after a predator departs, and the warblers took their cue and came out in quite substantial numbers. These are of a black-throated green warbler, which is a new species for me.

Finch in black and white. I haven't played around much with birds in B&W, but thought it worth a try with a rather drab finch.. Something a bit different anyway.

Eriet the first shot is a brilliant BeeIF. I've never seen than angle on a bee flying and really looks
good.

We're in the dog days of photography around these parts.
Most birds have left the area, the deer don't show up til after sundown.
I may have to sit back and just enjoy your shots for a while.

Yes, It looks to be a hair tie.
I've seen the squirrel a few times now. It's not tight on his neck. It moves while he's running/hopping.
If it stretches, like I think it would, he should be able to get it off, but when I've seen him, he pays no attention to it.

Hi, my first post in this thread.

Having bought simultaneously two 200-600 copies last month and after extensively testing both of them I finally chose which I thought was the best one at 500/600 mm. Which by the way resulted to be at 600 mm as sharp in the central zone as my 135 GM at f5,6. So very impressed with it.

I use the 2-6 with Sony A7 III and A7 RIII bodies, but on the latter the AF isn't so efficient and reliable as with the A7 III. In consequence I mainly use it with the A7 III, so the poorer guy here among so many A9s

I am wondering the best way to increase the reaching with the 200-600 and keep great AF. RIV? TC 1.4? Wait for a new body?

Also, the boats are being stored for winter so we can't even photograph from the water much more. Then we need to wait for the lake to freeze for some winter fun.

Is that a collar on a squirrel? or is that suppose to help the squirrel not to eat big nuts?

If you're shooting in good light, a crop sensor camera is about the same as having a 1.4 teleconverter on the lens, without
losing a stop of light. (but I really dislike the smaller batteries in most of the crop cameras)

Hi Davev. I am really looking for a complete solution in one body only, ie a camera capable of everything. Hi res, very reliable AF, hi speed shooting, primarily in ES without rolling shutter and blackout and great dynamic range. I think any crop sensor body available does not click all these requirements.

So thinking about it more deeply I have no choice but to wait until Sony releases such a monster. I considered for a moment the TC1.4 but given the already narrow f-stop nature of the 2-6 zoom I am concerned about the available light where I live forcing an ISO climbing I don't desire. On the other hand the A7 RIV is tempting me but given the AF issues with the 200-600 is discouraging and its ES suffers from rolling shutter effects. An a7 RIII IQ wise with A9 AF and 20 fps ES would be perfect. Sony has done both models yet, they simply have to mix them

In the meanwhile I am quite happy with my A7 III for BIF and A7 RIII for studio and static nature occasions. However, it is a nuisance to have to decide which camera take for every outing.
