Decided to try a gimbal for the 200-600mm. Couldn't justify the money for a Wimberley, so went for a knock-off (Movo), but so far I'm quite happy with it, and how it helps me follow the birds.

How are you finding the movement on the MOVO gimbal? I've read where some are experiencing stiff movements?

I had bought a Oben GH-30 but I may have gotten a bad copy and returned it. The movement was jerky and not smooth. And I didn't have any gear on it.

I could see it being described both ways. If the knobs are loosened, the movement is very smooth, but it also moves very easily. If you tighten the knobs to try to introduce some drag, it's a lot less smooth. I tend to leave the knobs loose, as I like to be able to move it very quickly. As long as you balance the camera properly on the gimbal, it doesn't go anywhere unless you want it to.

PS
I have no doubt that the Wimberley is much better in this regard, but it's far more than I care to spend.

Thanks! Yeah, the lottery isn't cooperating very much! Thanks again for your input!

With the set above there really was no flybys while in the kayak. I'm having some success but still no where near the confidence I have with the A9(II).

Yesterday I took RIV/200-600 in the kayak, this morning I took A9II and 200-600. I will say that even though the RIV is much better than I remember it, the A9II did not miss anything where as there were a number of shots yesterday (even some simple ones) where a great pose or behaviour happened and the RIV missed.

I'm going back and forth on the RIV day by day. It is so much better with my new settings and maybe the new FW but just nothing compares to the A9(II). Anytime I have the RIV out I'm always worried I'm going to miss something exciting. I like having the extra pixels when shooting the simple waders and perched birds but I know when the really interesting action happens for a split second that only the A9 has a real chance of nailing those really interesting shots. Even with the sandpiper in flight posted above the A9 only got a couple sharp but the RIV would never have got any. I had like a split second to raise and fire at 20FPS and just got that one frame I was happy with on the A9II.

Understand the feeling.Sad to hear from you considering your experience. I was hoping the new FW update would help.
Are you going to try the Canon R5 for the px count?

I'm going back and forth on the R5. Just a big expense for me right now (because I also need to buy a lens for it and the only lenses I would consider are 100-500, 400DOII or 400III) and it probably isn't going to make better pictures. But I will get to try Pius' copy when he gets one. He doesn't know when he will get one so could be weeks or months.

Thanks. I am in the same shoe, but have none here to try theirs. Afraid of the IP&S a bit, too. Can't wait for a truly reliable review either, especially in comparison to the RIV , A9.
