Great capture!. Hardest part is getting these little guys in VF. You nailed it.
Can you please tell us your AF settings for this kind of shots?
I use Tracking Sensitivity of 1. I use Release priority for AF-C. I use Wide AF mode (non-tracking). I can't think of any other settings. I usually just leave OSS 1 on but sometimes I'll turn OFF OSS if I remember to do so (but don't think it matters much).

Hi K-H,
It’s really nice to hear from you! Hope you’re doing well. Thanks for the compliment. Yes, I do very much enjoy the combo and it has performed flawlessly for me. I used it extensively last winter at Bosque, and today was my first opportunity since then to shoot. I shot probably 75% of today’s images with this lens and the rest with the 600 GM. Ease of weight handling is of course relative, but I find it quite comfortable for the most part. The framing flexibility of a zoom and the closer MFD are two big advantages over the prime, for the way I shoot.
Thanks again. I am glad you are fine as well. Please stay that way.
As you know I have the FE 100-400, FE 400/2.8, and the 1.4x, 2x teleconverters.
A bit more reach would be helpful. Weight-wise we have the following:
FE 100-400 1395 g (3.08 lb)
FE 200-600 2115 g (4.66 lb)
FE 400/2.8 2895 g (6.37 lb)
So the 200-600 is closer to the 100-400 than to my 400/2.8.
I have no problem handholding my 100-400, including with the TCs.
The 400/2.8 I mostly use on a tripod as I can only handhold it for a minute or two.
The 200-600 might be okay though.
One other issue.
On my 2 lenses I seem to prefer the 1.4x TC as to my eyes there doesn’t seem a loss in sharpness/crispness of images.
The 2x TC is okay, but not quite as crisp to my eyes.
How do you judge the TCs on your 200-600?
TIA.

Thank you. I had tracking sensitivity 3. This was a major difference. Anyway I can't complain camera was doing something wrong. Need more practice to keep the birds in frame.
One more quick question. a9 (Mirrorless in general) take much longer to wake up compared to say D500. I have missed shorts while camera is getting ready to shoot. Is there any tip to improve the start up time or at time not to go to sleep at all (while walking around or driving around and expecting birds any time).. I know this can eat battery. But that's ok..

Yes, I have mine set not to go to sleep but the LCD and EVF will remain off as long as nothing is triggering the EVF sensor. I also have developed the habit to half tap the shutter as I start the motion to raise the camera from my side to my eye. But there is no doubt that lag to get the camera and EVF awake is a problem with mirrorless cameras. You can actually switch a modern DSLR from totally OFF to ON and be shooting faster than waking up some of these MILCs from sleep.

Glad I asked. I was wondering if I was doing something wrong. This is one of the area MILC should improve. I'm not a big fan of EVF either. But I may have to live with it as MILC is the future. I'm not planning to get rid of D500 any time soon. But want to use A9 as much I can. Getting 200-600 too. I had an incredible opportunity the other day to get some bird action, but missed some in the air shots because birds were too close most of the time it was too difficult to keep them in frame. These two blue birds fought for a while. 500mm on D500 was too much many times!

Fellow photographers, I wanted to share some shots I took during my first outing with the Sony A9 and the 200-600. Some are with the 1.4x. All were taken in low light...ISO 6400 is the most common ISO setting on them, in the gallery below. Sorry, but the Image Uploaded software wouldn't load into my Mac. I'm sure it's user error.

While the entire population of Denmark is thumping around every small nook and cranny, where i use to do my nature photography. I had to make do with the birds in my garden while testing out the sharpness of the 200-600. Luckily this little guy wanted to participate.
