p.20 #2 · Sigma 35mm f/1.2 Art E Mount Lens Image Thread

I did a birthday photoshoot with the 35 1.2 and 105 1.4 last weekend and it was an incredible combo and experience using the 35 1.2 with eye af on two 1 year olds with fill flash on the godox 860. One thing i am curious though. I notice the lens profile through lightroom applies too much vignetting correction where I end up not using the lens profile at all. Gives an overall more pleasing look to the images especially at 1.2. Anyone else have similar observation? I have the in camera correction profile turned on but just as dustin abbot pointed out he too thinks it overcorrects the vignetting aspect.

Maybe i can enable profile and adjust vignetting manually. Just find it bit more time consuming when you have many pictures to work on.

What FPS does the A9 get with Sigma sony mount lenses? Does it drop it to 10 fps like with a sigma mc-11 converted Canon lens, or is it higher?

I'll assume Gabriel's answer is correct as I have never tested it or come across any literature explicitly stating otherwise.

TBH, there are very few instances I have ever even gone above M burst on the A9 as it is just unnecessary for most of what I shoot. Generally speaking, 35mm is also not an FL I would be using for anything I'd feel like I needed 20 FPS for.

As to FPS if the lens is wide open then it should go 20 FPS. Stopped down I would expect variation in fps.

Only specific Sony lenses go to 20fps. I have both Sony lenses that are 20fps "compatible" and non compatible ones..none of the Sigma ones do 20fps.

I'm a long way from knowing what I'm talking about, but: I suspect it might just be the case that the amount of vignetting correction is exactly right, but that the vignetting it's correcting is so strong that the image, with its exposure pushed very hard in the corners, begins to look a bit washed out and less punchy than it does in the centre once full correction is applied. The same as any image, even in the centre, would look if pushed multiple stops from underexposure.

The vignetting is fairly strong at maximum aperture:

https://www.lenstip.com/566.8-Lens_review-Sigma_A_35_mm_f_1.2_DG_DN_Vignetting.html

I see similar behaviour with the Zeiss Batis 85mm and its Lens Profile (which also vignettes a lot wide open - https://www.opticallimits.com/sonyalphaff/1032-zeissbatis85f18?start=1 )... If I give it the full 100% vigetting correction as per the standard camera profile for that lens it looks washed out, while at about 80% it looks better. I figure it's just what happens when you push a RAW a bit too hard, as these highly-vignetted lenses demand for full correction.

But I might be completely wrong about that. I do sometimes find that not using the corrections produces a more pleasing effect.

Depending on how you edit your RAWs there might be a way to set the choice for your Lens Profile vignetting correction in bulk, to avoid the nuisance value of all this.

Can anyone confirm 15fps with tracking with Sigma lenses on A9? I shoot sports for a living, my Canon adapted lenses drop to 10 fps but I get 20 with the 70-200gm. Might just have to rent and test.

I shoot professional sports for a living. The autofocus demands are high, and I haven't had good experiences with Sigma in the past. Just wanting confirmation from other sports photographers that the tracking keeps up on a non-Sony lens at 15 fps.

How is eye autofocus at f1.2? Does it nail the eye or eyebrows at close distance?

Let me put it this way, I have not noticed a higher rate of missed shots compared to my other lenses. On the other hand, I have occasional front focus with all my lenses (from 24 to 135 mm) at close distances and large aperture, I think especially with kids, their eyelashes confuse eyeAF more often.

Thank you. I heard that it tends to front focus at close distances when using eye autofocus at f1.2. I have Sony 50mm f1.4 and 135mm f1.8 gm and eye autofocus is almost always spot on, regardless of the distance.
