Do not underestimate your photography Jacques. I will comment first...I agree with those who mentioned the right eye in #1. I instantly was drawn to this versus the entire frame. Now as I say to many posters, as a viewer, not knowing if this was intentional or not and your purpose for doing so, I will gladly retract my constructive comment if you clarify...No need to just saying.
I find #2 well done and the jersey doesn't appear OE to me. But again..that is just me. He, being an African American, the brighter jersey, brings out his facial features more and accents them. It accentuates a friendship that appears to be disappearing in todays world. At least in the US.
Now there, that wasn't bad was it

Dan,

Thank you for your thoughtful comments!!

By any chance, you ever hear of a Nashville bass player named Bob Moore, an old guy, though still alive?

Thanks again,

Jacques

I'm not a fan of the first photo. That, to me, is clearly a case of TOO shallow depth of field. I dont need the second eye to be super sharp as well - but it shouldnt already start to substantly drown in the blurr of the out of focus area.

Indeed I have! Many years ago, I was in Austin,Tx substituting for a sick bassist, and Bob was in the audience. At that time I played a Gibson EB1. It is an electric bass that is played from the shoulder BUT has a pedestal(hidden) also. For a couple numbers I screwed in the stand.
After the show Bob approached me, introduced himself(I knew him by reputation only) and we talked all night. He showed me how to get more tone out of the strings using a finger method that dismissed squeaking in the sleeve noise while sliding from note to note.
I then saw him many times in the 70's and early 80's.
Thanks for the "mention".

As a former frequent contributor to Bass Player Magazine I'm going to have to look up Bob Moore. Nice to find "moore" musicians among the photographers here.

Dan (and Peter),
My connections with Bob were also positive and great fun. Not quite 25 years ago, I became pretty good friends with Scotty Moore (no relation, AFAIK), Elvis Presley's guitar player from 1954-1968. Scotty had a very nice studio at his home, in Nashville. He also had a group of long-time friends that used to come about once a month to record together, much of the time just for the hell of it; and to work together in the easy way people can who have played with each other off and on for 40 years. I got to attend a bunch of those sessions. The most frequent participants were Scotty, engineering (arthritis limited his guitar involvement); Bob, of course, playing bass; usually Billy Swan, singing; Fred Satterfield or DJ Fontana on drums; and Bucky Barrett, who spent many years with Roy Orbison, on guitar. Alvin Lee actually recorded an album there, but I couldn't get to those sessions. This was back when I drank, and ate recklessly—as did most of them. So, after the sessions, I got to sit around with them, sipping Scotch and eating fried chicken cooked by Scotty's long-time-companion, Gail Pollock. It was pretty damn good fun for me, a bozo with no musical skills of any kind! Sad to say, both Scotty and Gail died about 3-4 years ago. I deeply miss the social glue they provided! DJ more recently died, but I am still in contact with Billy, Fred, Bucky, and Bob's wife Kittra. I don't get the sense the information is all around everywhere, but Bob now has pretty bad dementia. Kittra seems to be an enduringly patient caretaker. I'll take the liberty of sharing with her your story of Bob's having been a gracious guy to you. Best wishes to both of you bass fellows!! I didn't read all the comments, but here is my feedback as a portrait photographer.

1.) It bugs me when both eyes are not in focused -- and, believe me, I've had to learn the hard way. With close-up head-shots, I almost never go below 2.8 aperture and, more likely, 4.0. You can still get great bokeh behind if positioned from the background well. The composition is fine, but the large white spot can bug people, too (I do that myself at times, but usually when I want the sun in my pic.) It is a bit dark and flat for light, but workable.

2.) I do see blown white parts on this one (my screen is calibrated,) but should be an easy fix. This is more candid than I usually take, so I don't have a lot of feedback on the composition but not crazy about the fist toward the camera. It does tell a story of some buddies playing, having a good time. Sweaty, tired, affectionate, happy. As a B&W conversion, it's pretty good.

3.) And now I see you fixed it -- good job!

Another person I met frequently was James Burton. A renowned guitar player from the old days. He too was in Austin with Bob.
Alvin Lee, Tens Years After, is one of my favorite musicians and his band also. Jerry Barnes and Bernard Edwards(RIP) I used to sub for on many occasions.

Dan,

It is, indeed! Everybody in that “gang” I mentioned had some kind of skill to contribute to the group. Mine was distinctly non-musical. I loved Scotty and Gail, and I had an “unlimited” pass to fly on American Airlines anywhere they flew, first class, and to take a companion. In the mid-1990’s Scotty, long since “retired” and morphed into “engineering” and some producing, had begun to get enticing offers from venues in Europe (and UK) to perform. He eventually got linked up with Alvin Lee’s bass player, Pete Pritchard, who somehow came up with a merry band of very talented Brits to play “behind” Scotty for these gigs. There are videos on YouTube of several of those Scotty in Europe performances. In the earliest times, DJ Fontana went, too.

The appearance fees, I guess, were ok. But the travel arrangement offers were almost always coach, lots of stops, and no ticket for Gail. So, for several years, I helped Scotty and Gail get across the pond to those gigs.

It was the best! I got to hang out with some very interesting musicians, listen to them from amazing seats—and to help a guy whom I thought had been criminally under-compensated for playing with Elvis every night Elvis ever performed, and playing on all the Sun and RCA records, from the first days at Sun in 1954, to 1968’s Comeback Special. He even appeared in 5 movies with Elvis. Total of right at $30,000, for all that!

To get back on topic, on a few occasions, James Burton kind of substituted for Scotty, when Scotty couldn’t go—playing with the same Brit guys who backed Scotty, just performing later Elvis songs. One of these times I flew with James to/from London. As you mentioned a very nice guy. And, a very impressive guitar player! Ah, music! And, ah, the old days!!

If you are ever in Dallas, stop in and bullshit!!

I love all these little peripheral stories related to our photography and life in general. I've certainly got to hang with some great musicians over the years of photographing them here in L.A., but Scotty Moore and James Burton are way up there in my book.

It is a small world sometimes Peter! Coincidence is a big part of my story and friendships/classmates with DC/Maryland rock stars(now- but just local bands then& garage jams)....word of mouth the other. College, the draft, plus 6 years in the military/finish college and a war, then a regular job interrupted my music endeavor but got to enjoy my times as a bassist very much. World and life situations altered my love of music enough not to be able to make it a career, if I ever got that far.

It should also be noted here that FM has/had members from the groups "The Association-bassist" , Chic, Bootsy Collins, Jeff Lorber, Greg Karukas, Bill Heller, Brian Culbertson, Candy Dulfer's- FunkyStuff, were all photographic contributors over my 16 years here. All but a few were bassists.

These are fan fotos shared with me and the group after a Disney World Show in 2003.
Poor quality but a great memento for me. I wear a "groove hat" while on stage.

Jacques,

This is my first posting on this forum. I have been a photographer, photo editor and graphic artist since the 1960s. You have gotten quite a range of responses to these two images. The two most interesting comments have been that the young lady's image reminded one responder of Mona Lisa and that you yourself pointed out how pretty and how carefully her makeup and hair appeared in this otherwise casual encounter (in which she was also taking photographs). Very unlikely.

Those were my first thoughts as well.

Here is my critique of these images. For whatever confluence of chance and skill on your part, these two photographs cannot be improved. There is nothing to change for the better. They are as good as it gets, even in a professional setting where a really talented pro is aiming for the different "looks" of each image.

Many photographers would kill to get as good a posed shot as your informal head shot. The perspective is incredibly good given the 50mm focal length and the fact that you just about filled the short dimension of the full frame from crown of head to chin. Standard advice and "common wisdom" is that at least a 105mm FL is needed to avoid ugly magnification of the nose relative to the rest of the face when composing a head shot in this way. Nice work.

The lighting is lovely. Whole portrait courses are devoted to what you have achieved here with the background lighter than her face and so nicely out of focus (frequently referred to as "cinematic"). Her makeup is as good or better than having had a makeup artist touch it up seconds before the shot. Her hair is just fine. It's not perfect (by a hair - pun intended) and that's what makes it more attractive in this casual atmosphere. Her expression is sublime. Her eyes and the (shallow) focus on them is beautiful.

The second shot looks like something an art director ordered to illustrate exactly what you described the situation really represented - three friendly, healthy, neighborhood guys playing hoops, stopping for a moment to grin into the camera. Slice of life, but taken "just so." Nothing to improve in any way. The white shirt is not over-exposed. It doesn't distract.

Congrats. Don't expect good luck to line up so perfectly for a long time again. You've used up your quota (wink) - even if you are as talented as these shots imply.

Good stuff.

Rich

Perhaps its the way the lens renders but the first image appears to have considerably skin softening added post processing. If so I would prefer a more natural texture.
