Looks like a nice lens, and it should be a good addition to the Sony line up. However, unless actual field test show something special, it is not compelling enough for me to swap out my 35 2.8. Especially considering the size and and under $500 cost that I paid for the 2.8.

Thanks to the stupid 35/2.8 pricing for wrecking what should have been a homerun $500 lens from Sony.
At least we get a focus hold and AF-MF switch, which are typically reserved for G or GM models, I guess. I'd never pay MSRP for this lens, will patiently wait for a nice clean used copy for $400.

Looks promising, but it needs to perform at 1.8 for me to sell my 35 2.8 gem.
Hopefully we've heard the end of the continuous 35 1.8 whining.

Looks huge relative to what I was hoping for.
On another note, this is great as it seals the deal (for me) and makes my decision to stick with the Sammy 35/2.8 (light/compact option) and probably scooping up the Sigma 1.2 (max everything option) easier.
Looks awesome on paper. Should be a great complement to the 55 f/1.8. I hope it performs on APS-C and A7r bodies, as I think that's the one area for me where the 28/2 is a little disappointing.
I appreciate that they included the AF/MF switch and the focus hold button.
This is fantastic. Looks like they have tried to do it well. I am positive that this won’t be like those bare-bone cheap lenses.
Size is ok, all said and done.

I think Sony's latest strategy is to make really high quality glass rather than just passable so that APS-C can reap the benefits.
From the 85 f1.8 and forward, I don't think they've made a weak offering since.
APS-C can and should use the new FF lenses like the FE 35 f1.8 and FE 85 f1.8 rather than a APS-C version. It's sharp enough, light enough, and price within reach even if a little higher. 280, and 360g, not really heavier than Fuji stuff, and if so, not by a whole lot. I would welcome a FE 28 f1.8, corrected, 280g lens like what I suspect this FE 35 1.8 to be. Sony's already touting corner to corner sharpness.... that means this lens will be good.
I'm liking this new Sony era, even though they're sort of milking the prices a bit....

Nope, sorry. We didn't need another mediocre 35mm option. A 1.8 GM is what I was hoping for. An FE model just doesn't give me confidence but testing may prove me wrong. We already have the Zeiss 2.8 which is decent and compact. Unless the images are stellar like my old Leica 35 f2 Summicron, I still won't be happy

Other than being larger than the new Sony... the $200 cheaper Samyang 35 1.4 remains a good buy... IMHO.
If you want to handle the weight...... I gave up due to the weight. Really loved the IQ, and price is very nice, but I'm not carrying that thing in public, I feel like a DSLR shooter.

Well the 35mm 1.8 is finally announced and as expected there is still a lot of unhappy people about it. As with any release it's impossible to please everyone. 🥴🥴🥴🥴🥴

That pretty much sums it up for me also. I think the lens will be popular with new Sony users rather than us veterans who already found alternatives to this lens.

Don't worry, the Internet crowd will find something else to moan about. (I mean, apart from the price of this lens... it frankly looks a little steep but maybe it'll settle down from the MSRP in a few months).

Looks really good. It feels small and light enough to basically have on the camera at all times. Price is a bit excessive though so I'll wait until I can snag up some used copies.

You'll never see a 1.8 35mm GM. It'll be 1.4 or 1.2.
" It’s small and designed to be on par with the quality that the 55mm f1.8 and the 85mm f1.8 deliver. If you know anything about those lenses, you’ll understand that they’re incredible values."
