I’m not sure anyone has been trashing this lens. Most of the quibbles so far are about price and rendering, which is often subjective. The Sigma 35/1.2 looks like a lovely lens but is something I would never buy due to its size. If I were a professional, I’d be all over that lens.

I totally get why folks who are clamoring for a small, high quality 35mm prime are excited about this lens, and it looks like a good option. It should pair beautifully with the 85/1.8.

I've noticed that rendering looks 'painterly' for the flower samples at close range. It's actually a nice look imo.
We need to remember to turn EFCS "off" with shutter speeds >1/2000s.

With how portable and easy to use this is, hard drive space is going to fill up fast...all wide open, and I actually really enjoy the bokeh for this series. I purchased this lens after this thread was 30 pages long, so I'm not one who is trying to justify my purchase - instead I want people to see 1.8 in different scenarios so they are better equipped to make their own choice. Each shot had minor exposure/color adjustments using the automatic features in Capture One.

Looks fairly pleasant the rendering on the weeds

Fred I think unfortunately what we are seeing is folks not doing that. Makes a big difference

Easily solved shoot in electronic mode. Only time I use mechanical shutter is when using Flash and LED lighting. Easy thing to remember outside ambient think mechanical

Wow - I didn’t realize people shot solely with this turned off. So since I don’t use flash, you’re saying I could effectively preserve the life of my mechanical shutter without any compromises?

Yes, if your subject and camera don't move. From a motion blur perspective, it's equivalent to 1/30s shutter (on the vertical axis). From exposure perspective it's as fast as you set it with the shutter speed dial.

I originally wanted a lens like this for the longest time but while waiting so long I picked up two lenses other lenses. The first was the Batis 40/2 CF which I really now like the focal length and CF ability and the second I bought just two weeks before the announcement was a very nice used 35/1.4 ZA at a great price IMHO. So I decided not to pre-order and just wait and see what came out. Have to admit for a long time I thought the 35/1.4 ZA was big and not what I wanted on my Sony system but with the 50/1.4 ZA, 135/1.8 GM and 85/1.4 GM it really doesn't seem so big and heavy. Also I have sold all my Canon primes and Canon bodies and overal my kit is lighter. Still very interested in the 35/1.8 so continue to read post on it but I'm in no rush so please keep all the information and images coming.

The overall rendering reminds me of the Loxia 35/2 (Nice subject separation, structured rendering).
I will actually compare both side by side.

My thoughts exactly Fred - I feel like we now have a Loxia 35 with fast AF that can deliver in similar areas, and keep up with the kiddos at the same time .

Yes, the Loxia 35/2 is not famous for smooth rendering either but many still love how it draws with great subject separation even at f/3.2.
The new Sony 35/1.8 can accomplish something similar while offering higher resolution with AF. I will do some rendering comparisons once I get my copy.

I will call the look ‘distinctive’.

FE85 is neutral.
FE28 has character (thanks to imperfection)
FE55 again is distinctive and one of its kind.

Weather someone likes smoother look or something else is highly subjective like all things photography.
I think optical analysis when done to achieve highest benchmarks, leads to sterile look.

I just got mine Took me 1 hour of driving through the gridlock from hell but I got it. So. Now I'm thinking to do some testing this evening - the kind that could quickly promote me to the "Top 10 most infamous posters"

1. Sharpness test with a flashlight as subject at 0.5m and 1m. And crosspost to the Sigma 45 thread.

2. Bokeh balls shootout vs 100mm STF

3. Set sharpness and saturation to -3 and take a few snapshots around the block, mainly in shadowed areas.

4. Go to the pond and take a counterlit pic, focusing right in the middle of the water, as to make the pic half greenish and half purplish, then comment on "LoCA".

5. LoCA test with counterlit jewelry, wide open at MFD

6. Last but not least, moar tree foliage against the sky.

And here a comparison to the 16-35 GM....I had no tripod, therefore a little challenging, but I believe we can see the GM effect in terms of rendering
