Yeah I think it will definitely be a consumer grade lens. I wish they would bring out a 35mm with the 24mm GM qualities. Great sharpness but retaining lovely bokeh. There is nothing like that at the moment as they all have comprises. I find the Sigma 40mm I have closest to what I want so far but the bokeh still suffers a little at certain distances.... (apart from my RX1rII that is!!). I know they can do it after the 24 GM came out!
Maybe the rumored Sigma 35mm native design will be the one....

Since we already have great 35/1.4 and 50/1.4 lenses (ZA) and the 40mm FL is gaining popularity, perhaps Sony is considering or already designing a 40/1.4 GM next.

I have the feeling it will be inexpensive, light and good (not great) just like the FE 28/2. Would love to be wrong though.

Thanks to the long wait, people have really high expectations so if it is a more 50mm f/1.8 inexpensive lens rather than an 85mm f/1.8 style lens, people will be pissed.

The product code (what this entire rumor is based off of) shows it will not be a G or GM lens.
SEL35F18F indicates a non-G or GM as all of those have the G or GM in their product name. The F on the end is not used on other lenses but since there is already SEL35F18 corresponding to the APS-C 35/18, the extra F must indicated it is a FF lens.

EDIT: actually F is used on the 50/1.8 product code (SEL50F18F) so there is precedence for the extra F and that is likely because of the SEL50F18 APS-C lens.

The reason this rumor got started was because someone at SAR erroneously published the product code with a G at the end of it instead of an F (the F designation was originally reported by Nokishita). An SAR reader brought this error to the attention of SAR in their comments section and they corrected it, leaving no trace of their original mistake on the web site. Someone here saw the product code on SAR when it had a G at the end and posted here about the lens being a G series lens. Rumor now has a life of its own. If one assumes that Nokishita is accurate (and from what I hear they usually are), this will be a standard FE lens and NOT a G series lens.

Well demonstrated how mistakes become reality.

It is FE and not EF, btw!

It's good that it's a a plain-jane FE. It'll be price-competitive with Canon and Nikon's offerings, which is what they need.

Doh! Thanks for catching that. I'm an old Canon shooter and my former Canon memory traces are still alive and floating around in my brain.

If they do a 40mm f/1.4 GM will that mean I will have to give up my Batis 40mm f/2 CF which I am very happy with as a walk around alternative the the 35/1.4 and 50/1.4 ZA? Though I also love the 50/1.4 but with its weight I don't carry it all day.

Yes, we have precedent to this when the FE 24/1.4 GM came as a direct competitor to the Batis 25/2.

That is why I don't read SAR....I get direct tweets from nokishita....SAR is hopeless, useless etc...

FWIW, the F has nothing to do with it being a non-G, non-GM. It is only on the code because the code without the F is already being used for the older APS-C lens. Most of the non-G, non-GM would just be SELXXFXX.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't G and GM lenses always end with the respective letter(s) in their code? Ie the 24-105/4 is the SEL24105G?

I'm really hoping this is more in the vein of the 85/1.8 in terms of quality and price. Otherwise I may as well continue to crop-mode the 24GM or practice my MF skills with the CV40.

Yes, exactly, they have either G or GM after the SELXXFXX

If they do release a consumer 35/1.8 lens, and given the poor reception of the zx1, it gives me hope we see an Rx1riii. Both of these products are differentiated enough from the Rx1 line.

If Sony releases a GM or G 35, I think the RX1 line is done.

Personally I think that ship sailed with the ZX1. Sony releasing ANY 35/1.8 suggests to me they’re going in a different direction now.

I doubt it’s going to be similar to either the 28mm F2 or the 50 1.8. The 28mm is a 4 year old design by this point and the 50 is 3 years old. Sony has been making strides with their lens designs in just the past few years. The 85mm proved that they could strike a good balance between price and performance and its runaway success coupled with the 35mm f1.8/f2 being on a lot of peoples’ wishlist means that they don’t want to mess this release up.

Just one 35 can never satisfy everyone. We need to have 5-6 35’s to select one that we like. The quest for an ideal 35 shall continue

About time. Now hopefully all the 35 f 1.8-2 complainers can finally be satisfied! It was growing a little tiresome going into various threads having nothing to do with a semi fast 35 mm and people bringing it up.

A 85/1.8 lens with great IQ is easier to design even for a budget price. That's not the case with a wide angle lens.
Having said that, 'great IQ' is relative as photographers either love or hate the FE 28/2.

From my cursory glance at a few reviews, it seems we'd be lucky to have it be similar to Canon's RF 35/1.8 that just came out.
