The current popularity of 40mm lenses continues to amaze me. 40mm lenses were available 10 years ago, such as the Olympus Zuiko OM 40/2, the M-mount CV Nokton 40/1.4, and the CV Ultron SL & SL II 40/2 lenses for DSLRs but they appealed to a relatively small niche of enthusiasts, many of whom I suspect had read Mike Johnston’s 2008 essay Why 40mm? I guess people tried it and liked it. It's an alternative to carrying 35mm and 50mm lenses.

This is exactly when I use my 40mm 1.2 on the m240, when its the only lens I'm gonna walk around with versus carrying a 35 and 50

So I see some folks are getting their copies from Canada or the UK for a discount. What foreign retailer are people using, and could they provide links?

Are imported lenses still serviceable under warranty?

If one needed their copy replaced or fixed, would it then have to be shipped back to the foreign retailer?

Would a foreign warranty cover a lens used in a different country? Is the warranty still applicable at all?

What is the return process like when sending back imported lenses?

If anyone could answer some or any of these questions that would be absolutely amazing.

So no one has any advice on buying imported lenses? Should I start a new thread?

Depends on the OEM as some if not most will not honor a grey market item for warranty service. Some will not even repair it for money. I don’t buy grey market myself. Obviously people are doing to save some money but try reselling it. A lot of people won’t buy them. Personally it’s a risk that I’m not willing to take

Yes, there is always a risk buying imported lenses but if one gets lucky with a good copy, who cares!

I tried the sigma 40mm and I prefer 35mm vs 40mm. I always feel 40mm is not wide enough. 35mm is the sweet spot for me.

Add it to your cart and checkout. The price should decrease at checkout once you say you're shipping it to US.

It appears that the MSRP is now 630 GBP and ~525 in cart which is ~17% off (VAT). That's ~660USD

Agreed! Just coincidence I'm sure, but I've actually had better luck in the lens lottery with international versions...

Okay this is really not a bokeh, character lens focal length for me. I have a CV 50 1.2 and a Samyang 85.

Really what I’m after is a event lens to match my other Sony 24,135 and I need really good AF

I bought the Sigma 35 1.4 which I had in the past and a decent lens. I’m wondering if I should get this instead. Main reasons AF /MF switch and extra CF button. This way all my AF lenses function the same way and I’m sure the AF is very good and maybe better than the sigma. Plus it’s smaller, lighter and a F1.8 is fine here. I may have to buy it and find out. Need the IV first though

Another review of the 35mm f/1.8 FE

Chris states that he finds it to be sharper than the Zeiss f/1.4 and is really impressed with this lens. So glad I preorded it.

Downloaded those RAW samples. Definitely the best sample images I've seen from this lens so far. Gives me a bit more hope after some rather disappointing samples that have been floating around. Still not the lens I was hoping for optically, but once the price drops I'll eventually add it to my travel kit.

Here is another one by Manny Ortiz in which he uses the FE 35mm.

He does state it is quickly becoming his favorite lens to use which is promising too. It's towards the end that he talks about the lens if anyone is interested

I had a look at some of Chris’ raw files in Affinity on my iPad. There is some colour fringing, but Defringe in Affinity fixed it to a large extent. The lens certainly is sharp enough and colours look good to me. This is what the 28/2 FE should have been.

The question now is, will there be 24/2 and 21/2 from Sony along the same lines as the 35/1.8 and 85/1.8?

I wish Chad had more comparisons to the RX1R II at various distances and backgrounds. From the samples I have seen so far, I think that transition zone is way smoother for the Sonnar 35/2.
