I've sold the 100 STF but I can always buy it back!
Wouldn't it be awesome to have a wide angle with an apodization filter?

Funny, that’s exactly what I was thinking of.... During the past days I browsed through a couple hundred sample photos from 35mm lenses, every mount and every brand you can think of, and I was coming to the conclusion that the only way to have it both sharp and nice rendering at this particular FL would be to use an APD element....

Perhaps the effect would not be as effective compared to having APD on telephoto lenses. Fuji has it on a normal lens (56mm) but it's APS-C.

and the Fuji appears to have a milder APD element - it cuts only 1 T stop vs 2 T for the Sony 100. So maybe it can be done at 35mm too, using a strong APD filter.
But the real reason I’m mentioning the article above is one interesting tidbit: the APD filter seems to enhance the MTF curves. This info was new to me.
If you guys could buy a Batis 40mm f2 for $950 would you're still buy the Sony 35mm 1.8 for $748 using all the information you have so far? The emphasis for this lens Would be general travel photography with close up capabilities.

Yes. Size. 35mm vs 40mm. And I'm not a fan of Batis bokeh.

If the image quality of the Sony is 90% as good as the Batis then yes, I would get the Sony. I think BOTH lenses are overpriced. Now if the Batis 40 price used came down to $825-850, I’d get the Batis for the build quality difference.

No, waiting for the price to be stable. Ordering from Canada is really tempting. I already have 40mm f2 and love it.

For me I have had the Batis 40mm since October of 2018 and recently picked a very lightly used Sony Zeiss Distagon 35mm f/1.4 ZA at great price so my need for the new 35/1.8 has gone away. Even with that I am wondering how it will perform so I might at least try one out. Could be a good companion to the 55mm f/1.8 ZA but I sold my copy of that lens and my 35mm f/2.8 ZA when I got the Batis 40.

If you ordered from Canada to the US, wouldn't your lens not be covered by warranty? I've also heard that official Sony repair services won't repair import models?

I also had a small 35/2, a Nikon AF 35/2, which was poor quality. It had a total of six or seven lens elements and was beaten hands down by the older manual focus Ai-S Nikkor 28/2 and the Zeiss ZF 35/2 on optical performance. I’m not persuaded by a comparison to 25+ years old AF lenses as my experience is that they were so so on digital. That poor fate also befell the venerable AF Nikkor 20/2.8 D, which was great on film and a disaster on digital.
The Zeiss ZF 35/2 was by no means small, but it is one of Zeiss’ great lenses....Show more →
My 20/2.8 pre-D AF Nikkor has a focus shift. Was this accounted for in the test?
Did you test on a Nikon body? Have you seen Roger Cicala's article talking about adapters, and their effect on iq?
If you are going to say Sony is light, which is supposedly part of Sony''s superiority, why does their 35/1.8 have similar heft compared to the old Nikkor, chock full of metal? Nikkors aren't that hot, a lot of times, but I don't say they are poor quality. They are good, generally, and I adapt them

For anyone in Australia, the official RRP is $1149.
I called Sony Australia today and managed to confirm this with them. I've now preordered it from CameraPro for $1129. No websites have the preorder option up but if you call them then they can organize it.

Just saw on another forum that Amazon UK has the Sony 35mm 1.8 for pre order for 442.81 GBP. I was able to preorder it to the US for total of $585.53 shipped.
