Regret waiting this long to try it. Might not have minded a 28-135 but it’s useful and a great people lens. Shot a lot of my kids with it but don’t really share them.
One more from today.

I wish nikon was a little more daring with lens specs sometimes.
As I was trying the lens out, on a few subjects, a wild King Parrot landed in our franginpani tree out the back. He sometimes visits, mostly in spring, with his mate and we can sometimes feed them some seed if we are careful. I haven't seen the female for a few days, but we are speculating that she is possibly on the nest as it spring here in Austalia. The male, and female for that matter, have both been very keen to get food, so we are thinking that they are feeding young and are thus a little more bold and not so concerned with us. I took a tray of seed out and put it down in the usual spot, but he flew into the house and landed on my grandsons toy kitchen cooktop! What an opportunity to try out the lens! After I took a few shots, I had to then get the tray of seed and get him to jump on it and then very carefully take him outside whilst on the tray feeding! I did it this way as if we tried to shoo him out, he may have flown into a window and that would have been disasterous.
Anyway, I am really chuffed at being able to interact with these beautiful birds.

I was considering the purchase of the Sigma TC-1401 to use with the Sigma 100-400mm lens. Since I already possess the version 1 Nikon 1.4 TC I decided to try it as an alternative. On the D500 the focus tended to hunt but was accurate when it did manage to find focus. On the Z7 the focus was much more positive. The only downside is the exif reports the files as the bare lens with no TC. The quality of the results I leave for you to make your own conclusion. These are three taken with the combination yesterday.
I love the backstory Lance... I'd love to have a super colorful bird fly into my house and join me for a snack.... sounds like something that could only happen Down Under
Looks to me that you and your new 50mm lens will have an amazing relationship!

I buckled and purchased the 50 f1.2S.
Lance,
Congrats on your 50!! Amazing story. It sounds like Dr. Doolitle And, great pristine shots and PP work.
As I love the focal length ( 50 ) , I have been a bit torn between 14-24/2.8 and 50/1.2. 14-24 range is more of what I can rationalize the use and 'want' , while 50/1.2 is harder to justify as I have multiple FX 50s. Lure of 50 is somehow still strong, and the more I see shots from this lens, more I get curious. Good news is, it has been back ordered on B&H for a while, so I am in no rush.

Thank you very much, Bruce. It was very much a highlight for me as I love to be able to interact with nature and especially these birds as they are so delightful with such a lovely nature about them.
The 50 f1.2 is quite an amazing lens, but rather an extrravagance. As we have been cooped up for 10 weeks due to the covid lockdown here, we have save lots of money and I needed an out let to get my mind of the boredom!

There is no doubt the 50 f1.2 is a stunning lens, but it is an exrtravagance (see my reply to Bruce above). The sharpness wide open, the bokeh, the separation and the overall IQ is gorgeous. The 14-24 f2.8S is also a stunning lens but for different reasons, obviously. If I had to choose one it would be the 14-24 f2.8S as it really is more useful for me. However, if you had say the 14-30 f4S already, then the decision between the 14-24 and 50 f1.2 becomes a little more difficult as the 14-30 is a great lens and the 14-24 f2.8S is only a small step up (I also have the 14-30 f4S). It really comes down to what you think you would use the most and what would give you the best satisfaction. Good luck!
