Were you using animal eye tracking? I have used it on my Z7 for a tiger walking towards me using my 70-200 f2.8 + 1.4x TC and it locked on solidly without misstep.
This was Wide-S mode...I've gotten pretty good at keeping the focus point group on the subject even at "slideshow" H* FPS mode. To be fair, I haven't really used eye tracking in these kind of shots...might do the next time out and compare the results.
Lots of hiking and sitting today... The more I shoot w/ the camera, the more I realize that the AF on the Z6II is more than a minor upgrade from its predecessor.
This is different to the last shot I posted a week back as I am using the 14-24 f2.8S at 14mm and the NiSi filter system. 6 stop ND and Polarizer, tripod.

Just so you both know, you are making things really hard on those of us that live in bland flatlands and can't go anywhere to see such beauty - due to COVID! ;-)
BEAUTIFUL work from both of you guys! Love it!
Thanks for sharing these. It's a bit of a virtual get-away.
I only tried "Animal Eye AF" once or twice with my Z6 and never felt like I could get much out of it - at least not with my "Model", Bogie.
I've been trying it again with the Z6II and my result are much better.
These were shot in Auto-Area AF with Animal Eye Detection. The little yellow boxes did a nice job of "sticking" to his eyes.
The 1st one should be easy as it was calm, but in the shade.
The rest others were with some unpredictable motion while he was tracking a squirrel on fence behind me.
Giving the Z6II a tryout at the track. Used with the FTZ adapter and 70-200E
I think the AF is incredible, I just hate the lag when I first put it to my eye.
I use it as a second body to my D5 and D850

Very nice, Michael! I'd like to see more of these. :-)
If it's the sleep timer causing your pain, try increasing the sleep interval from default to something like 5 minutes. I've done that on all my Z bodies, as waiting even a fraction of a second for it to "wake up" will cause a missed opp with wildlife in most cases.

thanks Phil, that was my next try, figured it would help.
Oh my god, that's good. I keep hearing people say the Z cameras have bad AF and stuff like this discredits those claims really fast. That camera should easily be able to handle event photography then. Creative Edge wrote:

It is amazing how well the focus sticks to a subject. If I did events it would be my go to camera. It is that good.
I'm thinking about using it to replace my D4 and pair it up with a D850 as soon as I get both cameras as my new event setup. Creative Edge wrote:
