I don’t know about using it as just a white light source, but Jake Hicks does some incredible stuff with projectors. At one point he had a blog post on what to look for and how to use it, but the link in my email was broken.

Only semi-off topic question...do any of you know anything about digital projectors? I think I need one. Apparently ~3000 lumens of a DLP type can get you iso 100 at about f2.8 and 1/125?! Mixing that output with flash sounds fun. I’m excited but I don’t really know a single thing about projectors.

This is the nicest picture I've seen from this lens so far.
People say they like the rendering but in all samples I see, I don't really feel the same. But this one of yours looks lovely with beautiful colors. What software/profile do you use to edit?
Many thanks ;-)
I've edited in LR using standard adobe colour profile, Auto WB and the only editing was a slight crop and a bump to the shadows (shadow +28, white +28, black -2)
I think what helps here is the camera to subject distance is short and the subject to background is long

Man I know how you feel. I haven’t shot with anyone but my wife in months. I was hoping to start shooting with folks again in July but the virus is exploding in Los Angeles County right now. I’ve been thinking about getting a new 50mm lens but maybe I should put the money towards a telephoto lens and a hazmat suit instead.

So I’ve barely done any shooting since March. It’s really sad. I finally got out to do some maternity photos and I realized how much I miss it, but also how rusty I am. I think I’m going to have to just walk around and take photos of nothing in particular just to keep the muscle memory alive.

Not much, if anything going on photographically, right now. And actually even for the foreseeable future as California is back pretty much to Square 1 in terms of lockdown measures due to the Covid-19.
This is from last year on a beautiful rocky beach in Malibu...

Great shot Joshua! We will have to meet up in person some day on the other side of this, whenever that may be.
Not much going on photographically here either. I've lately been busy editing an animated movie though, which is very weird and very feasible to do while socially distancing as there is no need to assemble a large crew in person to capture the footage.
I did however just buy a digital projector off of ebay. It's 3000 lumens, 720p and cost $140. We'll see how it goes. I think the power output will be sufficient, even to use in conjunction with flash on low power, but I'm not sure about the resolution yet. I conducted an experiment with my brother's 800x600 projector and tried to determine what a useable PPI would be for the projection, which of course depends on distance and projector resolution. Kind of weird to try to wrap my head around the resolution of a light source...Anyway, my wife and I will try some weird stuff with it at home and I will share my findings here.

Thank you very much, Matt! Yes, I’d love to do that although I doubt that we would be able to pull that off this year though, considering the current situation we are in right now.
Have fun experimenting with the projector and please update us with the progress here. Thank you!

The rendering from that zoom lens is really nice with beautiful bokeh indeed! I love the color you went for in these, specially the sky has an awesome look that contrasts with her pale skin tone.
Here in Beijing things are getting better, we’ve been a few days with 0 cases after the new spike from a few weeks ago. I’m partying out it friends and stuff around some of the few places open as you can see in my IG xD.
However on August 4th I’m flying back to HK, and they’re having a new spike there now, and things are getting stricter, again closing places, regulating meetings, etc. I’ll need to do quarantine once I’m there (but I already knew about these even before the new spike).
I can’t see the end of this situation really, I’d love to go to Spain to see my family instead of flying directly to HK, but with this situation I can’t even do that...

I bought the 50 F/1.4 ZA in December thinking that my brother would bring it out here in February or March when he was to visit. Needless to say, it was a canceled trip. Can't go back without incurring state quarantine upon return. Now we have close to zero cases, thinking of exploring some shoots when the kids are back in school. But wish I had that lens. It's killing me.
I traded in my Tamron 28-75 for the 55ZA in the meantime and will sell it once I get the 50. Still a nice portrait lens, that or the Samyang 85/1.4.
But now I'm not so sure how willing people will be to do shoots locally. Still a lot of extreme caution despite no cases of local transmission. I guess that is better than the alternative.

Ok let’s share some pictures from last weekend in the birthday party of a friend. The theme was coachella, but i didn’t really know what was that about and my costume is a bit off I reckon xD.
Shot with my A7III and the frequently underrated (even by myself) small and cheap Sony 50 1.8. It is perfectly fine for this kind of situations. I have thought many times on getting the Samyang 45 1.8, but most of the time the bokeh I see from that lens is, well, worse than the Sony 50...
I am liking more and more the colors I am getting from my A7III, and if (when) I move to Canon, most probably I will miss the low light capabilities of the Sony (one of the things why I sold the EOS R). All this pictures are pretty high iso up to 40.000, and after brightened up in post...
Some of them a bit blurred, etc since I was trying to optimize ISO, but for the kind of pictures they are, I think they look good enough.

I'm pretty excited as I have a few shoots lined up this and next week. First time doing it when not in an actual class. Once I have time to edit, will share here.
In the meantime, here is a recent candid portrait from the Ancient City in Samut Prakan.

Great image, Adam! I am curious, how did you focus that image? Did you use the Eye-AF on that one? If you did, the quite strong reflection didn’t seem to affect the Eye-AF there.

Normally it does interfere and I have to switch to MF but in this case the moment lasted at most three seconds and I had to rely on the flexible spot lock-on AF with eye/face detect priority. Would it be indicated in the exif if it did use eye-AF?
It’s actually really difficult for face/eye-AF to work when everyone is wearing masks, be it face shields or surgical masks. I’m pleased they are, but for ‘street portraits’ where I don’t have time for MF with shallow depth of field without losing a particular moment, it is quite difficult. I’m wondering if there is a possible firmware update that could help detection algorithms with masks on.
In any case, for this one I took perhaps ten shots on Hi+ shutter and chose the best one. But I think the majority were in focus. Perhaps a bit of luck that the face ended up with acceptable focus.
