Beautiful! I’m thinking sometimes about buying a mid range zoom (the sigma or the Tamron). The Tamron in HK is almost half the price of the Sigma, but I’m concerned about people complaining of the bokeh in the Tamron and also the 24mm end... but then the Tamron is smaller/lighter and well, cheaper.
I think I’m just having GAS as it has been a long time not buying any lens, but I should wait in case I move to Canon earlier than expected, or just buy the Tamron 24-70 Canon mount that’s very cheap... 😞

Speaking as someone who just sold his, it is very versatile, more than acceptably sharp (but not like the very best primes). Yes, bokeh can be a little bit ugly for portraits but most of the time you wouldn't notice unless the background is busy to begin with. Yes, it is sometimes annoying not to have the 24mm. There is some vignetting that is noticeable but can be corrected for. AF is decently fast. Sometimes has trouble in lower light situations acquiring focus compared to my other lenses.
I can't really complain much about it, though. It is very practical as a one lens solution for travel. I just sold it because it wasn't doing it for me anymore, I rarely reached for it. The images out of it can be cool and filmic. But I found myself defaulting to primes instead. If I was to buy this type of zoom again, it likely would be the Sigma for that 24. But as you can see from above, you can still get very nice images out of it. More of a personal preference thing one way or the other.

I like everything about it except for the bokeh haha. I mostly use it in close quarters or inside when the bokeh is not really significant. I might have gone for the Sigma if it had been available at the time, but the Tamron has great colors and contrast imo. I never feel like I’m sacrificing anything besides bokeh with it, and the tbh the bokeh is often totally useable and not distracting. Still not a strength.

Alright so I didn’t actually shoot these. I just edited them for fun during lockdown for two editing contests (one of which I won!) and tried to do some crazy whacked out stuff that I probably would never try on my own photo lol. So just for fun, here are the before and afters! Then I will shut up for a sec so everyone else can share haha.

It’s a bunch of layers and overlays. I masked out the background to put fog behind the subject and stairs and then put more fog “on top” of them as well.

That’s some quality content. No need to slow it down! I see this fog effect here and there. Is that just a pattern fill type thing in PS?

Only semi-off topic question...do any of you know anything about digital projectors? I think I need one. Apparently ~3000 lumens of a DLP type can get you iso 100 at about f2.8 and 1/125?! Mixing that output with flash sounds fun. I’m excited but I don’t really know a single thing about projectors.

Awesome stuff! I am pretty excited about the prospect of mixing projector + flash with projector as key light (flash will have to be pretty low power). I recently built a bootleg optical snoot out of a broken analog camera. I tried a look where the hard light of the optical snoot dominated but the fill ratio was high with a big soft light. I want to mess around with that some more and a projector sounds like it could be a very versatile hard light source.

Me neither, one of the people I follow on vimeo uses some crazy powerful ones for video work:

A continuous video light might be easier to work with projectors. I'm seeing the older Aputure 300d pop up in the LA area for like 350-400 nowadays occasionally. Probably only need 120d tho

Definitely more flexible, powerful and easier to rig up but is there a way to project custom digital images? That’s the main reason I’m interested in a projector. The prospect of being able to add fill light to the hard light of the projection sounds like a ton of fun!

So I’ve barely done any shooting since March. It’s really sad. I finally got out to do some maternity photos and I realized how much I miss it, but also how rusty I am. I think I’m going to have to just walk around and take photos of nothing in particular just to keep the muscle memory alive.

This is the nicest picture I've seen from this lens so far.
People say they like the rendering but in all samples I see, I don't really feel the same. But this one of yours looks lovely with beautiful colors. What software/profile do you use to edit?
