The more I use this lens, the more I am stunned by it. It seems to have been overlooked because of the release of the 14-30 f4S at the same time, which has garnered most of the spotlight, and thus the 24-70 f2.8S has slipped under the radar to a large degree. However, *this* is the lens that really shines, it is amazing, the detail and clarity is just incredible. Nikon have done a brilliant job on this lens.
Wonderful series Lance !!! The 24-70/2.8 S will be one of those lenses that people will be talking about over the next 5 years. The Z system is worthy to invest in just based on this lens alone

Thank you very much for your kind comments, Charles. Much appreciated!
I think you're right about how this lens will be viewed over the next 5 years or so. It's like a bag of primes!

WOW ! Great 2 sets of series. Great PP. Super clean and crisp. I hate to use this loaded term, but it gives strong sense of three dimensionality. I don't know if that is the lens, or the way how you shot them, or most likely both.

I agree. 24-70 is really exceptional. It already improved on the IQ of 24-70/2.8 VR which is already a very good lens quite a bit.
Very strange that not many people are talking about it. May be because there are more things people can complain about 14-30/4 which is more fun than boring praise for 24-70/2.8 S.

That is, until the new breed of Z primes make this look like a zoom lens again.
One caveat to watch for though ... with the extremely close flange distance, the resolving power of those new breed Z primes to come may be prone to bring back our old friend moire' (which I guess might be why the Z6 has an AA filter, Z7 none).

Or people are afraid to post pictures taken with the 24-70 f/2.8 S because every fault will be their own.

It is great that Nikon has produced an amazing lens that is a work horse for so many photographers. There are so many lenses with different manufacturers now and there is only a few really superb lenses that define the systems.

+1 they have a certain look similar to another manufacturer that shall remain unnamed.
It reminds my of a hybrid look if TWO other manufacturers with the initials L & Z gave birth to an S (which interestingly enough is equally spaced between L & Z in the alphabet).

Lance - looking at your photos I must keep reminding myself that I don't need this lens. Well, not at the full price for sure. ;D
Thank you very much for your kind comments, Luke.
However, I am not alone in being guilty of posting images with lenses that other's covet. One can think of the excellent photos posted by you (and Charles K) from the 28 f1.4E that I would highly love to have! Touche my friend.

Just tried the f2.8 S out again today (had tried out one at WPPI a couple months back) and was really impressed with the AF speed. Near instant in an almost eerie way and just razor razor sharp. Love the balance of the lens as well - they really nailed the design.
It’s likely going to be next lens purchase...
I am tempted to pick up a D5 though with prices plummeting lately with D6 rumors. I do shoot the occasional MMA fight but on the other hand I have yet to find the d850 with grip lacking in that setting. That 12 FPS machine gun shutter is like a freaking Gatling gun on a warthog though...

There's nothing wrong with the 24-70 it's a little gem. I still have and will keep mine for a superb lightweight alternative.
