I picked mine up a few days ago as it was released locally here on April 11th.
So far so good. Unfortunately, I sold my 24-70/2.8e VR before 24-70/2.8s is arrived so I have nothing directly to compare.
However, the lens feels quite substantial despite its smallish size. Focus ring has a bit more resistance to it than Otus and feel much nicer than the usual Nikon G lens in my opinion but I would prefer a little less resistance personally. The programmable ring is nice. I set it to EV control and it is out of the way and much much less prone to accidental adjustment than the ring on
50/1.8s and 35/1.8s.
AF is very fast on Z7 and low light focus is almost instantaneous and hunted much less than any other lenses that I tried on Z7 so far.
In my mind, 24-70/2.8e VR is sharp enough but I think its rendering is the best part about the lens. Very organic looking, nice 3D pop but 24-70/2.8 S just screams sharp to me right from the beginning. However, this is still very early and I am sure there will be other more qualified people who will give much more thorough review and impression soon.
Thanks for posting! I'd initially been firmly in the camp of keeping my 24-70 f4 S and adapt the 24-70 f2.8G when I want another stop of light on the Z7, but being honest with myself I'll prob end up getting the f2.8 S

I did not get 24-70/4 exactly for this reason. I was waiting to see if 24-70/2.8 is going to be as big as 24-70/2.8e VR or not then
when Nikon released the spec, I was very hopeful. It is a bit heavy but relatively compact. It is already quitte a bit shorter than 24-70/2.8e VR without FTZ adapter. So for now, I think it will serve as at f2.8 lens and is small enough as my travel/everyday use lens. Honestly if Nikon makes 24-70/4 as 24-105 or 24-120/4, it would make a lot more sense and I probably ended up with both.

2 x 24-70mm lenses a 50 & 35mm...where is the 14-30mm?
Over here it is supposed to be released on 20th or 24th or something, I don't remember exactly but I will be away during this period anyhow.
I like to shoot nightscapes which is why I am struggling with the 14-30 replacing the zeiss and 20G.
I don't do much wideopen shooting but its nice to have the 58 and 85m when I need it. Just wondering if selling those 2 and replacing with the 24-70 2.8 would be good for me.
I haven't had a lot of kit issues over the years but the Z is making things harder to figure out
It is Songkran festival or Thai New Year here, also known as water festival. Now temperature is around 40C+ in some parts of the country as we are in the middle of the summer so water festival is always fun.
Sorry the picture does not really represent 24-70/2.8 S at its best as my camera is in a Dicapac waterproof bag with a cheap plastic lens in front. When it is wet, it is a bit messy. Also my camera was pretty much at waist or abdominal level and I just pointed and shoot and hopefully AF-C with face detection would do its job
All the pictures were cropped a bit as the edge of the waterproof bag got in the way. Tomorrow is the last day, hopefully I could get out and try a few more shots. songkran1 by Suteetat S, on Flickr

tough call, I think that I would not miss 85/1.8 much if I have 24-70/2.8 S. However 58/1.4 is rather special and if you use it often, 24-70/2.8 is not going to replace it though. I sold my 16-35/4 VR already and will replace it with 14-30/4 but
I am still keeping my fast wide angle primes for nightscape though.
Unless you need the 2.8/24-70 for versatility and rapid response, I would not sell the 1.4/58 and 1.8/85 to get it. The two used lenses will probably only pay about half the price of the new 2.8 zoom. For me, it depends on whether the zoom can double as a landscape and architecture lens, so i will test how it handles light sources and reflections in the >16mm corners (where the Milvus 50 and 85 are not perfect).
This has made life very difficult. I do not need the 2.8 version, and will repeat that to myself a hundred times, before ordering it. My dealer will take the f4 version back at the kit price, so that’s an excuse!!
Nice photos and thanks for starting the thread. As people start getting them I am looking forward to seeing more photos from this lens.
I got my preorder on Friday. Only quick test shots so far but initial impressions are positive. The lens feels very nice in hand, a step up in quality over the 24-70 f4S, notably the lens hood and the zoom ring. Size and weight wise it reminds me of the 24-120 F4 that grew by 10%. It is not small or light but very reasonable for a FF 2.8 zoom and better proportioned than the F mount versions.
These videos comparing the 24-70 2.8S to the 24-70 F4S and 24-70mm 2.8E VR show how good this new 2.8S lens is. I am looking forward to putting it to use.
The Nikon Z 24-70mm f2.8 S is an expensive lens, clearly bigger and 300g heavier than its smaller sibling, the Z 24-70mm f4.0 S. Is it worth spending the extra and accommodating the heft? And is the new lens the rightful successor to Nikon’s professional F-mount workhorse, the 24-70mm f2.8E VR? I’d say “Yes” on both accounts. Nikon’s newest general purpose zoom delivers the highest optical quality including the best Bokeh and very usable close-up performance in a package that is smaller and lighter than the f2.8E VR and has the decisive advantage of a one stop larger focal ratio over the f4.0 S. So if you want the best 24-70mm zoom for your Nikon Z bodies, get the new Z 24-70mm f2.8 S: it comes Highly Recommended!...Show more →
