Got mine yesterday and took a few test shots with it at my camera store. Super sharp and fast AF. I have never really kept at 24-70mm zoom although I bought both the F mount versions at different times, but this one looks like a keeper. Perfect for travel!
Got my camera back from Nikon and headed out for some pics, weather was moving in so did not get much and did not notice it was on jpeg(Ug)
Nikon Z7 and my new 24-70 2/8 S

Fully agree. I've had different 24-70/2.8 lenses, and while I've been very happy with the 14-28 and 70-200 zooms, I always used the 24-70 only when I felt really obligated needing the versatility of the zoom. Pictures were good, but I always felt significantly lacking vs. my equivalent primes.
With the Z that has changed. The 24-70/4 is a great lens, just the f/4 is a bit slow and lacking when you need more subject isolation. I just traded it for the 2.8 S, and the lens is excellent, providing pretty much what would expect of a prime, albeit at 2.8 will not be the best solution all the time, but can certainly be a lens for a good amount of work.
Went for a long walk yesterday with the Z6 & the 24-70.
Observations so far:
- top notch build quality, feels super solid in hand
- balances well with the body
- no need to 'unlock' the lens to start shooting
- 82mm filter thread (matches 14-30)
- the little lcd display is pretty useless & need to figure out what to use the custom button for.
I agree. Until we get more Z mount primes and then the bar is raised again!
What I like about the 24-70 f2.8S is, you can use it wide open and it is *sharp* (like the 24-70 f4S as well). I didn't ever think the 24-70 f2.8 Fmount lenses were sharp enough wide open on the high res bodies.

Indeed - I wasn't going to sell the 28mm... but who knows.
I just got invited to join the official documentary team and photograph Burning Man again this year. I can see myself not switching lenses at all and shooting the whole thing with this one zoom.

I really am hoping they release a Z mount version of that stunning 28 f1.4E! I wouldn't be selling your until they do!
I can see me using mine all the time as well. The only time I will need a "better" lens is if I need under f2.8 and then use my 35 f1.8S of 50 f1.8S.
I wonder if we are going to get f1.4 lenses from Nikon for the Z. I wouldn’t be surprised if they went with f1.8 compact and f1.2 super high end bulk no object.

Cheers,

There's a 50/1.2 on the roadmap for next year!
Also thanks everyone for feeding my GAS. I caved and ordered this lens today!
