just bought the samyang 85 1.4 to pair up with my sony a73 . found that in AF-S mode , center point focus , the lens struggle in focusing especially in low light. it's much slower than AF-C or video AF in the same environment. It can take around 2 secs to focus the centre point using AF-S . less than 1/2 sec for af-c or video af under same environment.
not sure I had a bad copy. anyone here have the same issue with AF-S mode ?
Why would you use af-s? I'm always on af-c with mirrorless, especially if you use back button af. yuji82 wrote:

The Milvus 85mm is more contrasty than any other 85mm I've seen. It's even more contrasty than the Otus. The Loxia 85mm comes close. In my experience, no 85mm with autofocus can match the Milvus in contrast.

Is the micro contrast diff between samyang and batis considerable? I have the Milvus 85 as my other 85 and want an AF option

Hey y’all, I have a question. I got my 85 in the mail today from BH and the lens box was pretty rough and beat up. Everything was in there, except the lens cap was ajar from lens. I plug it into the dock to update firmware 3 to 4 and notice its already been set at -1 af adjustment.
Did I get an open box or used lens you think? Anyone else's come with af adjustments already set on lesn?

I honestly don't recall what mine was set at, but I recall reading in various threads that others' Samyang lenses (maybe not the 85 specifically) have been at settings other than 0.

The lens is commonly set by the factory during testing at something other than zero. So I wouldn’t worry for that reason alone. But a beat up box and parts being detached is a warning that either the package handling was poor or it was previously opened. So it very well could be an open box item, but test the lens for proper operation/centering and if it looks good, don’t worry about it.

I just got the lens couple of days ago, played with it as much as I could. It produces beautiful results for sure, but it's not without it's problems when it comes to AF (at least my copy). I have more out of focus images than I would like (especially under artificial light). What is strange is that the lens confirms focus, when upon review it just isn't there. Either slightly behind focus or completely off. This happens with moving subjects (my kids, which I can understand) but also with static ones. I'm using AF-C. Is this something to be concerned about or normal-ish behavior?
I do like the output of the lens though.

I've been through one shoot chasing a sub 2 year old and my results were fantastic. I think out of 200+ shots, I had to trash 2 or 3 b/c of missed focus. Everything else was SPOT on, also using AF-C with eye af

Hmmm...that's not the case with my copy. Like I said mine misses focus even on stationary subjects sometimes. My settings are AF-C with eye AF and expanded flexible spot (all on A7R III body). Am I overlooking something? My Zony 55 has no such problems, nails focus every time under same settings.
Has anybody else been experiencing similar results with the Samyang?

If you're within your return period, I would swap the lens. Also, which firmware are you running? v4?
