Thanks!

Btw. Can you hear the AF-C working with your copies of the Samyang 85? Mine sounds pretty much the same as when shooting with the Sony 50 1.8 (if I remember correctly). In any case, there's a constant noise/"rattling". In contrast, my BATIS 85 remains completely silent all the time.

Can anyone confirm this noise? Just want to make sure my copy is okay.

Mine makes the noise as well, and this I think is the problem for the focus variability, the lens is all the time micro adjusting the focus, it’s “too responsive”, maybe Samyang is tweaking that for a9 and for burst shots, but for regular shots it’s destroying accuracy.

By the way, i’m Finding out that there are less variability in af-c with ibis off, but i’m Just testing at home.
Could any of you test this?
It’s like the af system is not well synchronised with ibis... let’s see when I have a chance again to shoot daylight portraits and check.

I did some more testing between the Batis and the Samyang. Anyone who's interested follow this link:

https://stefansipl.prodibi.com/a/521ev920lq0544z

As with the first series, you can also download the pictures in full resolution if they are of any benefit.

I'm still undecided which one to keep. I'm about to sell my Batis, but I like it. However, 1.4 sometimes makes for a little bit of lovelier background.
Where the BATIS ist better => contrast (as mentioned before) and silent AF.
From the testing I did, I could not decide which AF is more accurate or faster. I still have Firmware 3 on my Samyang. Will update it as soon as the dock arrives.

Which one would you keep? One can hardly decide from the pictures I think. I tried to vary light. One shot was really bad with the Saymang since the white balance seems to have missed it pretty much (artificial light).

Which one to keep is the question I'm still undecided about. But the tendency goes toward the Samyang because of F1.4. I'm not sure whether the additional image stabilizer of the BATIS will make any difference when shooting in low light conditions.

I see FM is selling his 85GM in favor of the Samyang...

Mine is arriving mid week. Nervous about the lens QC and AF but largely hopeful based upon feedback/photo shares from this thread. I will share when I get some time with it under my belt.

For some of us with a Sony 135 we are looking at the 85 now more as a gap lens and the Rokinon 85 has really nice rendering so like Fred I decided to go with the Rokinon but I put more stock in using the Sony 135 more anyway plus I need faster AF than the 85 GM.

I would not read into his decision , it’s just a chose . Plus some of us have either a Sony 50 1.4 or a CV 50 1.2 on the wider side as well.

I’m Cv 50 1.2, Rokinon 45 1.8, Rokinon 85 1.4 and Sony 135. So reality is for me I got it covered like a glove and with different looks

Hey Guy, quick question for you. I had the CV 40mm 1.2 (multiple times actually) and loved it. Consolidated down to just an AF kit. Anyway I have the Samyang 85 1.4 as my "look" lens and like it but wondering if the CV 50 might fit that same bill in a smaller package. Usually when I use the 85 it is only for a specific look. So I'm thinking the CV 50 might accomplish the same thing in a smaller package. Obviously a different focal length but as far as rendering what are your thoughts between the 2. Thanks

The CV 50 renders a lot like the 40 but actually smoother and no onion rings. It’s also as nice as the Sony 50 1.4 . It’s a look lens all the way. It’s smaller than the Sony 50 too. I think you would like it a lot. If you like the 40 you would like this better

Honestly didn't notice any real difference. Mine has never been perfect when it comes to hit rate. Have some time this weekend. I want to mess with the dock and test to see if making any adjustments + or - really does anything or not.

Took out the old truck tonight since it is suppose to rain all weekend

Whoa, uh. Did you add vignetting in post?

Yup. Figured that would be obvious

Nerd alert. So curiosity got the best of me and I actually had some time to kill. I wanted to see what if anything adjusting the autofocus would do through the lens manager. You have the option of -4-3-2-1 0 +1+2+3+4 settings. First off this is not a highly scientific test. I just set up a tripod on my deck and placed my Celtics hat about 46 feet away on a planter. Based on shooting the 85 at 1.4 from 46feet I should have about 7 feet roughly of DOF based on my calculator. Anyway I started with the lens set to 0 then when from -4-3-2-1 0 (again) +1+2+3+4 0 (again). Obviously had to take the lens off mount on the station, make adjustment and save, disconnect then do this in between each shot. Did the zero three times just to compare each to see if they would be the same. Anyway, the adjustment definitely are doing something. For my lens 0 was the best setting. -1 and + 1 were close but zooming in at 2 to 1 there is more detail at 0 and +1. So at least based on my testing of this lens it appears the setup at O was the right one. It is interesting others had different settings. Anything past -1 or +1 in either direction was just mush when looking 1 to 1 or 2 to 1. Anyway just thought I would share. 0 and +1 are very close though.

Thank you for doing the test! Not sure why there is a need in the first place.

Did you notice in which direction the focus is moving with those adjustments?

mine was set at -1 when I received it so I guess each copy has different optimal settings.

I also bit the bullet and shelled out GBP 50 for the lens station to get the lens updated to v.4 (I presumed this wouldn't be the last update!) Have not tested extensively but initial impressions are positive - with faces and eyes at medium distance, AF-C with eye AF seems to be locking on accurately with static and slow moving subjects. This is with high contrast scenes as London has been very sunny this morning.

Running toddler tests forthcoming this weekend!

Btw my "AF PINT" is also -1 by default on my lens.

I really like this lens. However, one thing I'm not fully certain about are the colours. I like warmer colours, so I basically like the Samyang.

However, I have the impression that skin colours always demand a lot of fixing. What is your impression with regards to the Samyang 85's colours?

I still haven't sold my Batis 85 so I'm wondering which one is the best choice for me. I like a lot about the Samyang, but this one thing makes me think.

If accurate skin tones are truly a priority I’d recommend a color passport of sorts. Otherwise, as long as it’s tasteful it should be fine. You could just make always make import preset on Samyang pictures to dial the warm tones back a bit, though AWB takes care of a lot.

Earlier on this same thread Fred provided his LR preset for balancing colors on Samyang. I use C1 so that preset doesn’t work, but I find a slight change in cooling down overall colors works just fine with this lens. Knock your WB down 200k and you should be set in most cases, and you can create a quick preset to do whatever you want for the lens so I wouldnt think colors are a holdup for this lens.
