Interesting! I asked 3 months ago and the QA technician I talked to said it was completely normal. When did you ask and what department were you talking with?

This is not related to AF noise (motor) noise. I think what the OP is referring to is related to aperture blade noise only.
If you set "Aperture Drive in AF" to "Silent Priority", there won't be any aperture blade sound because the camera will focus at working aperture. (So, if the FE 24/1.4 GM's aperture is set to f/4, the lens will focus at f/4)
However, if it's set to "Focus Priority" or "Standard" we should hear noise from the aperture blades opening and closing. This happens because the lens opens the aperture to focus and than closes back to the working aperture before picture a taking (this makes a noise). I'd say it's normal operation.

I called twice to 888-222-7669 (in warranty repair) and 877-591-7669 (Sony Service and Support). I talked to the rep and he put me on hold to check with his technicians, and then he returned back to me saying it was not normal to behave like that. I explained to him that the aperture blades were closing and opening while half-pressing the shutter (only when set to f2.2 to f16), and was making a sound while doing that. A work order was created and was told to send it in for repair.

You are right Fred. Mine is not the AF motor noise. It is definitely the sound from closing and opening of the aperture blades. Unfortunately I am only using a7RII so don't have the silent priority option..

Looks like I'll have to call again! Mine is definitely the blades as well.
