Four copies?
Four copies seems to be the magic number for people with lens issues. Why not 2 copies or 5 copies it's always four.

I am quite new to Sony, but have started off with 6 GM lenses an 2 bodies. I noted aperture noise when shooting in manual exposure and the view finder simulation turned off. This seems normal as it stops down just before shooting rather than remaining stopped down. Likely your issue here.

With Sony it’s an audible advantage! It lets you know the lens is working. Other lens don’t have such a feature! 😁

Long-time lurker, first-time poster here. Wanted to ask the insight of owners to assess whether there is a QC issue with the Sony 24mm f1.4 GM lens in regards to autofocus and aperture.
Basically, I've tried a total of 4 lens that have seen variation in the following areas (my latest lens exhibits these characteristics the least but is still there):
1) Aperture grinding sounds. Similar actually to the Sony 55mm 1.8, upon turning on the camera, changing aperture (notably from f1.4 to f2 and then f8 to f16), you can hear a sort of grind or audible movement of the blades rubbing on each other.
2) Autofocus Motor thudding: Especially in low-light and low-contrast fields, but still in decent light as well, in AF-C and AF-S, as the focus changes, you can feel vibrational thuds along the frame of the lens.
I definitely feel that there is variation between the four lenses I've tried as the above traits varied in intensity and wanted to know if others observed the same? Thanks for your help! ...Show more →

Oldish thread, but Sony mentioned how to make it quiet. Which suggests it is normal?
menu page 8 / select aperture drive in AF/ switch to silent priority / it warns that AF may be slower.

I recently acquired this lens and it has the exact same issue. Every time I half press the shutter, aperture blade moves and makes a sound. This happens whenever I’m at f2.2 and smaller. Wide open and up to f2, it doesn’t make the sound perhaps because the blades are already open.
Should it be ok to think that this is normal? It is still under warranty so was thinking of maybe contacting Sony about this issue to have it repaired, if possible. I’m just concerned that if only few are experiencing this issue and most of theirs are quiet, I wouldn’t want to be stuck with a dud.. Thanks in advance.

To be honest, I think that's just the way this lens works (some sample variation applies probably too). I also think most people don't notice it or don't care enough to report it, because it is not that audible under normal conditions ...

Thanks for your feedback! I guess I’ll give few more days to see if I’d be ok with the sound... I am still curious if this is a fixable issue... and wonder how come some others don’t experience this. I mean don’t all 24GM lenses’ aperture blades open and close whenever the camera is half-pressed (only when aperture is f2.2 or higher) and making a sound while doing that?

Mine makes the reported noise as well. I have messaged Sony QC about it - they compared it against inhouse models and found that the noise is present on 3-4 different models they tried and is 'intended' and normal!

You can make it quiet(er) by changing it to silent priority as someone mentioned above. I haven’t noticed any change in focus accuracy or speed even though it’s warns it may be slower.
But even the “loud” version isn’t noticeable in normal conditions - that is to say when I wasn’t in a quiet room trying to hear it.

I don't think I have that option, as I'm using the a7RII...

Sure will do. Yes you are right that there are number of defective ones out there but also good ones as well. I don't want to be the one having to live with a defective one..
