p.1 #1 · Sony 24mm 1.4 GM QC Issues? -- Or Normal? Please help!

Edit: If you guys could simply test your lens by using AF-S, setting the aperture to f4 or f5.8 and up, and then half press the shutter to see if there's audible aperture sound, that'd be much appreciated. Some are saying there's no sound, some can hear it.

Long-time lurker, first-time poster here. Wanted to ask the insight of owners to assess whether there is a QC issue with the Sony 24mm f1.4 GM lens in regards to autofocus and aperture.

Here's a link to DPReview where a good handful of other owners discuss the same issue: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/61924620

Basically, I've tried a total of 4 lens that have seen variation in the following areas (my latest lens exhibits these characteristics the least but is still there):

1) Aperture grinding sounds. Similar actually to the Sony 55mm 1.8, upon turning on the camera, changing aperture (notably from f1.4 to f2 and then f8 to f16), you can hear a sort of grind or audible movement of the blades rubbing on each other.

2) Autofocus Motor thudding: Especially in low-light and low-contrast fields, but still in decent light as well, in AF-C and AF-S, as the focus changes, you can feel vibrational thuds along the frame of the lens.

I definitely feel that there is variation between the four lenses I've tried as the above traits varied in intensity and wanted to know if others observed the same? Thanks for your help!

We have not seen any reports I don’t think of the users here on the forum. Might be safe to say we as a group have not seen or reported it. My copy seems dead on but as always copy variation can be the culprit and you got very unlucky with 4 copies which totally sucks. My copy I don’t hear anything from it. Did all 4 copies exhibit the exact same issues.

I’ll certainly double check mine. Thanks for the heads up

I imagine Sony is having problem with the new AF motor. The copy I tried had none of the issues above.

Mine works just fine without any issues. And the optical performance of that lens is great, I may add.

Is this the 85GM noise 'issue' all over again?

Well I'm happy you guys aren't having issues. Yup all four lenses experienced the above issues to varying degrees. I still have a few weeks to exchange this lens and might do so. Great that you guys were able to obtain a great copy.

I looks like I'm not the only one according to the dpreview post and I'll post this over to their forums to get a discussion going. I'll double-check with BH Photo too to get their insight in case it's useful to anyone here.

Hey Melindra, sorry to beat a dead horse if it is one, but mind explaining what that 85mm noise issue is? Is it something that's overblown or I'm being a bit too OCD about when it's a non-issue? Hah I'm a little worried about my expensive purchase is all!

Well it was a little overblown but it did have some noise and actually my first copy I did return it. Mine felt like grinding and my dealer thought so as well. Not that there was not a issue but like anything a mouse can turn into a elephant on the internet. But you do have to remember there is a electronic focusing motor in these lenses. I guess for some it maybe a tolerance level, although mine seems very quiet.

may I ask where you got all 4 of your copies? That seems like a really bad luck. Do you have any other high end Sony lenses to compare to?

You are just hearing the blades opening and closing when focusing. I would not call it grinding though. Honestly when I'm looking through the EVF I barely notice it, but yes if I put my ear to the lens you can hear it. If you have it in AFc you will notice it is quieter because the blades are not opening and closing all the way to focus. In AFs if you look in the front you will see when you focus they open wide to focus and close which is the sound your are hearing.
Not sure about "thudding". No "thudding" on mine. I mean there is a motor moving an element to focus.
Impressive you actually found 4 lenses to test .

My copy has none of the issues you listed and often surprises me with how sharp it is. It’s easily been my favorite lens since recently shifting from Canon.

I had to check this out, not having noticed anything myself. I can indeed hear a plastic on plastic rubbing sound when turning the camera on and off with the 24GM. By contrast when doing the same the 55 sounds like something loose is inside rattling around. If you’re trying to hear something, changing the aperture is audible. Nothing I hear am I concerned about.

If you're worried about the AF noise don’t try the 85GM. Both can be heard, I don’t think either are a problem. I hear no motor noise on the 24, just movement, the 85 you can hear the motors a buzzing.

Absolutely no issues here, either.

I know of three other copies in the wild, none of which have these issues (one had a slightly worse corner but within reasonable spec)

Overall I'd say, as far as I can tell from here and cases I know personally, a world of improvement in variability since the early days of Sony E.

I used that lens quite a bit yesterday and I didn't hear any noise from the AF motor nor from the aperture mechanism. I just checked it again in a very quiet room. The AF of mine definitely doesn't make any noise. The aperture mechanism does make a slight noise if I put the camera close to my ear. The noise level audiible if the camera is in front of my face or at arms length.

Well, since pretty much all of us didn't notice any problems until this thread and the lens has been around for, what a month or so, then I would recommend labeling the issue or issues as "very isolated" rather than "wide-spread" as the title of this thread may suggest. You know how paranoid people could get when it is coming down to the lens quality issues .

Wow thanks for the quick responses everyone, really appreciate it. To answer some questions here, yes I was fortunate to try four different lens. I'm more mind-blown that everyone here got perfect lenses and I get four duds. Two of the lenses came from Amazon, one came from an authorized Sony dealership from a reputable brick and mortar in Florida, and the current one came from BH Photo.

And yes, all three earlier lenses were confirmed to have the issue when sent back to the sellers. They saw what I was referring to. Maybe I should buy a lotto ticket.

If you guys could test one last thing for me, I can replicate my aperture noise "issue" perfectly when the aperture is set to f4 and above on AF-S. Shutter and iso whatever needed for good exposure. Upon focusing, I'll hear the "grinding" or focus sound clear as day. Crazy loud? Definitely not, but not the pure silence some of the users are reporting here.

And to me that's an issue in that sure, maybe it's nothing, but if some lenses are silent, I don't like that mine is making audible noise in a not-so-quiet room.

I'll post this to Dpreview to let others know the majority here does not have issues like they're experiencing. Thanks again! And sorry about the sensationalist thread title

I had a problem with my first lens copy and raised it in a thread about a month ago. My second copy is better but still exhibits some of this behavior which is different than my other G and GM lenses. Not sure if this is the issue that you are describing:

My copy is fine, nothing out of the ordinary compared to other lenses.
How did you get 4 lenses? Very hard here to get even one.

All I can hear on mine is the aperture blades opening and closing, you can't even hear the motor at all.
