p.3 #1 · Sony 24mm 1.4 GM QC Issues? -- Or Normal? Please help!

My greatest concern was that I could FEEL mechanical movement, somewhat like your hand gently striking a wall, a faint thud. I did not test to see what parameters of focus mode and aperture might affect this, but sometimes it was quite prominent, others not so. My replacement lens hopefully arrives next week..I'll post an update on the second.

My aperture blades are "noisy" but no more noisy than other Sony lenses I own.

Right, I wasn't saying that the aperture blades were loud, I was just saying, when i'm in a quiet location and listen to the a9/24GM while I hit different focus points around the room the only thing I hear is the aperture blades shifting. No grinding, just a normal sound. The AF motor is SILENT and fast and really quite awesome. In fact, this has become my current favorite lens...

I don't have this lens but don't forget the SETTING EFFECT. With some lenses, turning it off can make for more aperture noise.

Aperture noise can be normal. Those blades need to snap around FAST, and very precise, to avoid flicker or exposure variance between shots!

I agree.... it never crossed my mind until I sat down and deliberately listened to it.... as you say, it's not grinding but a shifting of the blades. I also love this lens, the images, the size and general look of it.... it's been on a camera ever since I received it.

Since I've also bought Sony 24 GM recently, I've recorded a short video showcasing AF-S focusing sound (hard to call it noise):video

You'll need to turn volume up a bit to hear it past ambient sound of fans in my pc though

Hey j4nu, thanks so much for that video, that's exactly what I'm experiencing, very audible aperture sounds on AF-S and virtually quiet on AF-C. I'm glad to finally see that others are noticing this as well and I'm not going crazy.

I apologize if I'm alarming others with the description of a "grinding sound"; that was the best way I could describe it. But as we see in this forum, others are saying their lenses are silent, and others are noticing this aperture noise. If others could simply chime in on seeing if their aperture makes a sound at f5.8 during half shutter press, that's all I'd like to hear. Because the fact is, if the majority aren't hearing a sound during this test, why wouldn't someone want a lens of the same condition? When you drop $1.4k, I'd imagine you'd want the best possible product.

To answer some other questions, yes the camera firmware is updated. And yes, JohnDizzo15 brought up an excellent point about the subjectivity of sound (I'm young and have still have decent hearing). It's just that when the lens is marketed by professionals and users as being silent, you can bet I was worried when I hear this aperture noise. I'm new to the Sony ecosystem. I don't yet know what's considered "normal" when it comes to aspects such as these.

Anyways thanks again guys, please do let me know how the AF-C test goes when you get an opportunity. Appreciate all the great feedback

Where I currently stand is that if many are observing the aperture sound (moving blades) during AF-S, then sure I'd take this to be normal and I'll hold onto the lens. It's fantastic as described and I want to keep it on my camera.

But lastly, do note there are bad copies out there with regards to the auto focus not locking properly and causing vibrational pulsing that can be felt. Those were seen in the first three copies so be aware are were reported by the vendors to be defective.

As others have pointed out. You are just hearing the blades opening and closing to focus in AF-S, you will not here it in AF-C because they don't open all the way. Mine makes a similar noise and works perfectly fine. I don't see the big deal. Listen to all your lenses, you can hear the same thing happening. Depending on the make and size the sound will be different and some might be louder than others but they all make "a" noise. Especially if your shooting with your ear to the lens. The only lenses I own I can't hear opening (if i'm really listening for them) in AF-S is my manual lenses. Just go out and shoot, enjoy the lens, there is nothing wrong with it.

Bummer. I really love going in there. My wife would appreciate it if Sony Australia went down the same road

Hey my 24 GM had the focus pulsing issue a couple times, I unmourned and then re mounted and it went away each time. I think that’s the A7r3 though, not the 24 GM.

also are you in “balanced emphasis”, autofocus, or “release” in the autofocus menu item?

Can you measure the sound of the aperture blades grinding with your iPhone or Android using a decibel meter app? That would eliminate any subjectivity in your testing method. The iPhone microphone is very sensitive and will record reproducible results. Android would work too.

My copy is fine, nothing out of the ordinary compared to other lenses.

How did you get 4 lenses? Very hard here to get even one.

Good question to ask. Four copies in a few weeks is another unlikely part of this strange tale.

Amazon still isn't shipping until after Christmas and B&H has none available. I know that Guy was waiting a while for his first copy. I was very lucky and worked hard to get two by acting fast on reports of availability.

Four copies?

My lens also makes the sound with regards to the aperture in AF-S. It doesn't sound like a scraping sound to me - its more mechanical in nature. It does it at 2.8 also, but its not as noticeable (probably because the blades aren't having to move as far). I can also feel the lens when its focusing and hear it if I put my ear up to it. Its not very pronounced though. I'm betting this is pretty normal behaviour - where some will notice it more and others not so much.

Yes, I think it is pretty normal as well. I do find it interesting that when it happens on a Samyang/Rokinon lens it gets perpetuated as a big problem, but otherwise when it is a Sony lens

Still waiting patiently to receive my 24mm from B&H. The Sony 28/2 and 55/1.8 also have very pronounced aperture blade noise. I just picked up a 55mm again and I had forgotten how noisy it was. Would have hoped it wasn't an issue on the 24mm given my Sony 85mm 1.8 seems pretty silent, and never had the issue on the GM zooms either.
