Read this: https://blog.kasson.com/nikon-z6-7/shutter-shock-and-the-nikon-z7/

Leave EFCS on unless you're shooting above 1/2000s.

Way off topic but it is early and I am probably grumpy but something in the blog drives me crazy and I will quote:
"There’s an error in the caption. The shutter speed was actually 1/50 second."
"the take-home lesson here is obvious:"
I think the take home should be that if you are going to conduct any kind of detailed experiment where measurements are recorded and settings are changed then please make sure you present your data accurately. When making a presentation that includes "There's an error in the caption" then that makes me think about what else contains errors. Were his settings what he says? Were there more errors he failed to see/report.
The point made may be a good learning opportunity for the rest of us, but this is presented as almost a detailed scientific report. If you want the "last word" just saying you should maybe get the words right before throwing them out all over the net?
Just an off topic opinion :-)

Yes, I understand that, I'm used to using Electronic shutter on X-T2 a lot, it's not new to me, but there are situations when you're forced to use mechanical shutter at those lower shutter speeds.
Bottom line, we're paying extra $'s for this camera with IBIS, which should help here, not to make it worse.
Thanks for pointing at it!

Hopefully Nikon will address it in future firmware release. The only problem is - Nikon is not exactly a Fuji regarding new firmware releases.

That's what I'm hopping for, as I'm falling in love with this camera...

One small nitpick I'd like Nikon to address: default to a closed mechanical shutter when the camera is turned off. Offer a menu option to set this as open or closed, for sensor cleaning purposes.

Having the sensor exposed when changing lenses offers too many chances for dust or other problems. Surely this can be addressed in future firmware.

The risk in doing that is you’re more likely to accidentally damage the mechanical shutter. What happens if you accidentally touch the shutter blades?

Oh yeah. This was with VR on, 1900 shots only 29% battery used. 71% left. The z6 is basically the best bang for your buck if you have Nikon glass.

Yes ftz compatible and it's the tiny ARCA plate from peak design.

It is my understanding that the newer USB-C iPad Pros can directly connect to the Z6 or other cameras with a USB-C to USB-C cable. I wanted to see if an older iPad with a Lightning port could connect using the USB-C to Lightning cable. Normally this process needed a Lightning to USB-A adapter then USB-A to reader/camera.

I did a quick test as I had the cable already and unfortunately I could not get the iPad (or my iPhone) to import the photos using this method. It looks like that other adapter is still necessary. Just an FYI to anyone who may have been interested in this like I was.

Just for reference - seems to be this one: https://www.peakdesign.com/products/micro-plate

Not cheap, but at least it fits the body. Maybe even possible to use two - one on the body and one on the FTZ?

Measurements: 1.7 in (4.3 cm) x 1.2 in (2.9 cm) x 0.6 in (1.5 cm)
Weight: 22g - much lighter than an L-plate

I am a big fan of the Peak Design stuff. If it works with the FTZ then it is a good choice.

Went for a little nature walk today with the z6 and 35s. Love the handling and weight of this combo.

Received my Z6 a couple of days early today. So far only been able to take a quick tour through the menus, check out the handling, take a couple of test shots inside, etc...here are my instant impressions without really using the camera in any capacity. It should be noted that I've only ever used a MILC once, a Fuji something that a co-worker handed to me for a weekend last year. I'm purely a hobbyist photographer with no professional experience or education. Since I began this hobby, my cameras have been a D50, D7100, and D500. This is my first MILC as well as my first full-frame.

  1. The body had more weight than I was suspecting when I lifted it out of the box. It feels substantial but not heavy. The materials are classic mid-to-high range Nikon, it doesn't feel cheap in any way. The Z6 just looks really nice, almost sexy. Obviously subjective but for my tastes, I feel really proud to own this thing. I just like the way it looks.
  2. I'm a bigger guy, 6'4", with hands to match. My pinky obviously doesn't fit on the grip unless I choke up really high, which then makes all the other buttons hard to hit. This was expected and not a concern for me.
  3. The touch screen is responsive when using the menus, more so than I thought it would be. Menus are classic Nikon so I'm instantly comfortable.
  4. At first I was worried about losing a couple of buttons that I had gotten used to on the D500 but the quick "I" menu on the screen makes me feel much better. It seems really accessible and I think I read somewhere that this menu can be customized as needed, so that's great. I'll dig into that later.
  5. I like how the two front F buttons pull in towards the grip instead of just being a push-down button. Makes them easier to engage.
  6. I tested connecting it to SnapBridge on my iPhone and had no problems. This is in stark contrast to my experiences with the D500, where I literally was not once able to see and download pictures from the camera to my phone in the 2 years I owned it. With the Z6, it connected fine and immediately showed me my pictures I had taken.
  7. I only have two lenses that are good for FX. I threw on my 85/1.8 using the FTZ adapter and it works perfectly fine, no issues. AF-S single point seems fine and in my dark kitchen, illuminated only by the light in the adjoining dining room, I had no problem with locking on (with the green assist light on) at various points down the length of my kitchen. Still lots of testing to be done here but AF-S single is where I live most of the time, so I'm not concerned about AF performance for my needs.
  8. I took a couple of photos to get a feel for it, one at 2.8 ISO 3200 and WOW. Granted, I did not download to the PC and only viewed on the back screen, but noise performance looks amazing. High ISO performance was one area I was always slightly disappointed in with the D500. It did well but just not as well as I always thought it should based on other's opinions. I am cautiously excited for what I've seen here already.

Really looking forward to going through the menu in detail and configuring this thing to my liking. As said before, out of the 8 lenses I own, only 2 are FX usable. Kind of scary but I'll be selling those off as well as the D500 to hopefully fund a couple of great zooms. Until that happens, I'll have a 85/1.8 and a 105/1.8 to play around with, which is right in my wheelhouse. Really happy with what I've seen so far.

It was pouring today so didn't get to shoot much. We had 100mm of rain since yesterday (4 inches). I wanted to try some wide angle stuff with 14-24 but would get raindrops on the front lens element non-stop. A couple more with the very good 24-70 f4.

FWIW, I have always enjoyed Kirk as an option to RRS. B&H has their stuff in stock for the Z6/Z7 so I have a base plate on the way. I will post it up when it arrives if it seems like a good option. In the past I have found Kirk to be of very good quality and a little cheaper usually.
Please note: I am not using the FTZ and did not consider if this would still be a workable plan.

For people looking at small plates for the bottom of the camera and/or FTZ, I have a few of these and they work well.

Sirui TY-C10 Quick Release Plate. Allows you to mount one on the camera and one on the FTZ without any interference issues. $10 cheaper than the PD micro plate.

I don't have a Z6 (yet), but regarding plates, I wonder if the Breakthrough Photography 40mm plate would work with FTZ adapter, I have one sitting around and always thought it might be good for a small body...

I would be curious to see a comparison of the 24-70 f/4 kit lens to the "old" 24-120 f/4 Kit lens for F mount. I have had focus/sharpness issues with my 24-120 but I knew that going in, just curious if the S mount 24-70 blows the 24-120 away or if they are a pretty close match when used on the Z6.

BTW ive been getting in a little tiff with the boys over at Dpreview's forum regarding AF tracking, so i decided to post image sequence bursts while tracking Metallica. i guess it worked out that i shot a shit ton of images.

check it out here. God knows how many frames are actually in it, but it shows the AF potential of the Z6.
